God is in control

We read in 2 Samuel 17:14:

14 So Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than the advice of Ahithophel.” For the LORD had purposed to defeat the good advice of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring disaster on Absalom.

It’s quite interesting how God works in the background. We can see this in the life of David.

Absalom had the wisest adviser on his side. The Bible says this about Ahithophel:

23 “Now the advice of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if one had enquired at the oracle of God. So was all the advice of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom” (2 Samuel 16:23).

Absalom asked for advice from Ahithophel. Ahithophel gave wise advice and when followed, it would lead to David’s demise.

Absalom had heard great and wise advice. Yet, he still asked for another piece of advice. This time, it is from Hushai.

We can see that Hushai’s advice appealed to Absalom. One reason is that the advice of Hushai appealed to his vanity. In Ahithophel’s advice, it is Ahithophel who will go out and pursue David.

In Hushai’s advice, it is Absalom, himself, who will pursue David. Absalom might have thought that he wanted to be like his father, a mighty warrior who leads his army to victory.

Yet, we also see the real reason why Absalom heeded Hushai’s advice. It was Yahweh who worked behind the scenes so that the advice of Ahithophel would be defeated.

This should remind us how Yahweh is in complete control. We may feel like things are out of hand, we can be sure that the Almighty is still on the throne. He is the ultimate Authority of this universe and nothing happens without his knowledge.

All things could have favored Absalom at that time and all things are against David. However, even if the world turns its back on you, if God is for you, no one can defeat you.
