📅 Who will you serve? – Daily Bible Reading

June 8, 2022

Today’s reading: 1 Samuel 11:1

Who will you serve?

We read in 1 Samuel 11:1:

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”

Jabesh Gilead is an Israelite city and Nahash the Ammonite wanted to conquer it.

For the men of Jabesh, they thought that the only hope that they have is to surrender to Nahash. For them, it is better to serve Nahash, make a covenant with him, and surrender. This is more acceptable to them than getting destroyed and killed.

Here’s where we see how Israel had become too corrupt in their ways. Instead of looking to God, humbling before Him, and repenting of their sins, they would rather surrender to their enemy!

We see here the deadly effects of sin. It doesn’t just make people lose their hope, but rather, they lose their will to fight and get discouraged too easily.

To serve a vile master is better than to die.

Thankfully, God wasn’t done with Israel. Through Saul, God has rescued the city of Jabesh Gilead.

Nevertheless, we must learn the important truth here:

When it comes to serving, we must rather serve God than men. Yahweh is the noble, merciful, and gracious Ruler. He only has our best interest in mind.

On the other hand, men generally are selfish and will only think of themselves. They don’t naturally care about other people unless it serves their own interests.

Isn’t it obvious that between God and men, it is way better to serve God?

Yet, this is not always the case. People would rather serve others than Yahweh.

We don’t have to make the same wrong decision.

We can and we must choose to serve God rather than men!
