Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 32:48-50

So near, yet so far

We read in Deuteronomy 32:48-50:

48 Then the LORD spoke to Moses that very same day, saying: 49 “Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession; 50 and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be gathered to your people…

Yahweh told Moses that He will not cross the Jordan River and set his feet on the Promised Land.

This could be a bittersweet moment for Moses. He spent the last 40 years of his life leading the Israelites and now, his physical journey with them was about to end.

I can just imagine how Moses felt that day. He might be glad to see Canaan but sad that he won’t be able to go there.

However, no matter what Moses felt that day, God has a better plan for him and for His people. The Almighty perfectly knew that Moses’ purpose and mission were now complete. It is time for him to rest.

We can be like Moses. We have dreams, plans, and goals in life. However, God has a better plan, and sometimes, that plan includes laying us to rest.

Our ultimate goal is not simply for this life, but for the life that is yet to come.

I believe Yahweh comforted Moses with the promise that He will one day rise up from the dead and receive eternal life. His heavenly reward is far greater than anything this world could offer.

(It’s quite interesting that there’s a strong indication that Moses, along with Elijah, would become one of the two witnesses. So, in the future, Moses will still have a mission to accomplish.)
