Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 15:1-2

Hope for the poor

We read in Deuteronomy 15:1-2:

1 “At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts. 2 And this is the form of the release: Every creditor who has lent anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not require it of his neighbor or his brother, because it is called the LORD’s release.

This is the economic prescription of Yahweh to address poverty in the land.

In every society, nation, and culture, it seems the poor will always be there. The Almighty knows how poverty will always be a problem and thus, he provided a solution to it — a solution if people are willing to follow, we will see the eradication of poverty.

Every seven years, those who are indebted would be free of their debt. This allowed people to start over again and prevent chronic poverty in the land.

What’s more powerful about this command is the element of faith on the side of the lender.

We read in Deuteronomy 15:4-6:

… for the LORD will greatly bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance— 5 only if you carefully obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe with care all these commandments which I command you today. 6 For the LORD your God will bless you just as He promised you; you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.

It takes faith to cancel a debt. Even in our society today, I’m sure a lot of people would find this difficult to observe.

Yet, the Most High made a promise that He will bless those who will put their faith in God and follow Yahweh’s release.
