Humbling experience

We read in Deuteronomy 8:2:

2 And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

Yahweh brought Israel to a situation where they can’t depend on anything or anyone except for God. Constantly, they need to look to the Almighty for their daily sustenance. They must continually look to God for protection, guidance, and mercy.

One of the reasons the Israelites needed to stay in the wilderness for four decades is that they needed to be humbled first. To serve and follow God demands great humility.

God can’t teach you or use you for His purpose if you are not humble and teachable.

Thus, the humbling process of the Israelites includes testing. That’s why God says “to humble and test you.”

God tested the Israelites not because God doesn’t know their hearts, but rather to help the Israelites know their hearts. Through trials and testing, the Israelites would hopefully realize how proud and boastful they were.

If you are going through trials right now, look into your heart. See if God is trying to humble you. See if He is trying to remove pride that keeps you from fully following Him.

May you and I not go through the “wilderness of our lives” without learning to be humble.
