Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 1

The Speech to Remind

The book of Deuteronomy is an important book of the Pentateuch. It has often been quoted in the “New Testament.”

Deuteronomy actually means “second law.” It is like a long sermon given by Moses. With passion and a heavy heart, Moses used this opportunity to remind the new generation of the history of Israel, what happened before, and why they are in that situation.

Moses had seen the rebellious attitude of Israel. He knew exactly of their tendencies to doubt God’s promises. Since Moses won’t be with Israel when they enter the Promised Land, he wants to persuade them as much as possible to be strong in God and obedient. He wanted them to be faithful and always trust in His divine plan.

Thus, this book is a book of reminders. By reminding them of what happened, he hoped that they will learn the lesson of the past and bring these lessons in remembrance as they enter the Promised Land.

There’s nothing wrong with looking at the past as long as you don’t dwell on them. The reason we look back is to learn its lessons and be a better person than we were in the past.

In Deuteronomy, we will see how Moses recounted the history of Israel, the law, and God’s promises.

Right in the first part of his speech, he reminded the Israelites and us as well of this very important and encouraging truth: ‘Do not be terrified, or afraid of them. 30 The LORD your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you (Deuteronomy 1:29-30).
