Today’s reading: Numbers 15:32-36

The man who gathered sticks

We read in Numbers 15:32-36:

32 Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation. 34 They put him under guard, because it had not been explained what should be done to him.

35 Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 So, as the LORD commanded Moses, all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, and he died.

In Numbers 15:32-36, we read about the man who gathered sticks on a Sabbath and was punished. He was stoned to death as a judgment from Yahweh.

A lot of Christians today would tell you that if you’re going to keep the Sabbath, you should stone to death those who break it. Since we don’t stone people now, then it follows, we also shouldn’t keep the Sabbath.

Obviously, this is faulty reasoning.

Here’s why:

For one, the Bible tells us that it is not only Sabbath-keepers who are stoned to death. Idolatry, being a rebellious son, and sexual immorality are all punishable by death through stoning.

So, if we are going to follow the reasoning of most Christians today, we should also become idolaters, rebellious, and sexually immoral because we don’t stone them anymore today.

Since we are in the New Covenant, we enjoy the benefit of the sacrifice Yahshua has done for us. When we sin, including when we break the Sabbath, we are not immediately killed, but we are given a chance to repent, change our way, and become better Christian.

The story of the man who gathered sticks on the Sabbath gives us a lesson that Yahweh is truly serious about His commandments.

It teaches us that through the sacrifice of the Messiah, we are given the chance to grow in the grace and knowledge of Yahshua.

  1. This is the reason why we should not mix the covenant law with the old covenant law. It will mislead people and will cause confusion. If you will observe old covenant law, the curse Gal 3:10 will be applicable to you.

    • Galatians 3:10 tells us:

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.”

If you read that verse carefully, the ones who will be cursed are the ones who don’t follow the law of God. Nowhere in this verse you will read that we should not keep God’s law anymore.

You can read the full explanation here: https://becomingchristians.com/new-covenant/what-is-the-curse-of-the-law-in-galatians-310-13/

      • You forgot the word “all”. In that verse it clearly says that the ones who will be cursed are the ones who don’t follow all the laws of God given to Moses and that includes the law on sacrifices, cleansing law, atonement law and all other laws. All things which are written in the book of the law. Not a single one should be missed. That is how the old covenant works requires.

      • Hi Bhelaim,

This verse refers to the works of the laws, which are the sacrificial and ceremonial laws that Christ’s sacrifice ended. Because if you believe that this “all” includes the TC, then are you telling me that I will be cursed if I honor my parents? Not steal? Not commit adultery?
