📅 Lessons from the Book of Numbers – Daily Bible Reading

April 18, 2022

Today’s reading: Numbers 1

Preparation

We now come to the book of Numbers. The name of the book seems to suggest that it is all about numbers or census. However, it is actually a misnomer. The name Numbers is inspired by the Greek Septuagint.

The Hebrew name of the book gives us a more accurate expectation of what the book of Numbers is all about. Its name in Hebrew is Bemidbar, which means In the Wilderness.

It is quite interesting to note how the Israelites came out of Egypt as slaves. Spending so many years in Egypt seems to have created a nation of free people but with a slavery mindset.

As a result, the Almighty needed to prepare the Israelites to enter the promised land. Part of that preparation is knowing your resources. Thus, a numbering was made.

We conquer the Promised Land not by our own strength, but by God’s strength.

Now, this is not to show us that it is by the strength of numbers that the Israelites will conquer the Promised Land. At the end of the day, it is not by our own strength, but by the Most High’s strength.

What this should teach us is that the land has already been promised, but the Israelites still need to fight for it. It means they have a role to play for them to conquer the land.

The wilderness is not the destination but rather the preparation and training ground. It was only a temporary dwelling place. It is not where they have to live in.

Due to the stubbornness of the Israelites, they will need to spend another 38 years in the wilderness. Thus, the process of turning a nation of slaves into a nation suited for the Promised Land has begun!
