📅 Israel’s adultery – Daily Bible Reading

Today’s reading: Exodus 24:3-4

Israel’s adultery

We read in Exodus 24:3-4:

3 So Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the LORD has said we will do.”

4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD. And he rose early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

Israel has been spiritually betrothed to God through the Sinai covenant. When they said, “All the words which the LORD has said we will do” (Exodus 24:3), that’s like the equivalent of “I do” in modern weddings.

In just a few weeks after the sealing of the covenant, we see in Exodus 32 the golden calf incident.

Moses was gone for just about six weeks and the Israelites started to lose their faith, trust, and loyalty to God. To top it all off, even Aaron consented to the creation of the golden calf.

Israel’s idolatrous act was also an adulterous act. They have just recently made a covenant with God and now, we see here how they broke that covenant and played the harlot with a golden calf.

If you can’t imagine how frustrating it is, think about a newly wedded couple who are just married for a few weeks. In just less than a month, the husband finds his wife with another man on a bed!

If you were that husband, you would surely feel immense anger and frustration. So, we can just see why God’s anger is kindled against Israel to the point that He wants to completely wipe them out and begin with Moses again.

The Apostle Paul instructed us to learn from the Israelites. Spiritual adultery is a huge sin we must all overcome. Yes, we don’t create golden calf now, but there are certain things today that we can still consider an idol.

Anything that comes between you and Yahweh is an idol. Don’t commit the same adulterous sin the Israelites committed. We must stay faithful and loyal to the One we made a covenant with.
