📅 The Heart of the Pig – Daily Bible Reading

March 24, 2022

Today’s reading: Ezekiel 36:26-27

What kind of heart do you have?

We read in Ezekiel 36:26:

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

On January 7, 2022, David Bennett, 57, is the first man who received a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig. This made headlines around the world as this is the first-ever procedure of its kind.

The one-of-a-kind procedure is the culmination of years of meticulous research and could change how organ transplant is being done.

While the procedure was considered a success, doctors still don’t know the chances of survival of Mr. Bennett and whether it will significantly extend his life.

Moreover, the procedure is considered an experimental surgery. It brings a lot of unknown and known risks to Mr. Bennett.

This reminds me of what the Bible says about the exponential explosion of knowledge in human history as we come closer to the end time:

4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” Daniel 12:4

There’s no doubt, we have created so much knowledge that we can’t even comprehend within our lifetime.

The Bible also tells us about a heart transplant. However, it is not going to be a heart transplant from a pig donor. It’s a different and more remarkable transplant that transcends the spiritual realm:

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26

The heart of stone represents our wicked and rebellious human nature. The heart of flesh represents our willingness to obey God:

27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Ezekiel 36:27

Jeremiah added more detail about this heart transplant that’s going to take place:

7 Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am Yahweh; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart. Jeremiah 24:7

When we seek God’s help to turn our heart of stone to heart of flesh, we are endowed by His spirit. It turns us from rebellious people to obedient people.

Mr. Bennett might have a new heart of a pig, but as Christians, we aim to have a better heart, a heart to know God, and a heart to enable us to walk in God’s way of life.

(Update: on March 9, Mr. Bennett died. The exact cause of his death was not mentioned but the medical team stated that Bennett’s condition began getting worse several days before his death.)
