Today’s reading: Genesis 50:4-6

Are you trustworthy?

Joseph was among the greatest leaders we read from the Bible. What made him a great leader is his trustworthiness.

He was a man you can trust. If he says something, you can count on him that he will do it.

When Jacob, Joseph’s father, died, he made a promise that he will eventually fulfill.

We read in Genesis 50:4-6:

Now when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying, My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come back.’ ”

And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

Joseph was a man of his word. When he promised Jacob that he would be buried in Canaan, he kept his promise. There’s no need to sign any contract. His word is as good as a contract.

Even the Pharaoh has a great level of trust in Joseph. Joseph promised that he would bury his father and return. Pharaoh, without thinking twice, gave his permission.

A person who keeps his word will enjoy favor. People will start to trust him because he has integrity.

This teaches us that keeping our word is truly important if we are to become effective ambassadors for God.

How about you, when people think about you, do they think of a person who is trustworthy?
