Here’s an interesting and sobering study:
Mentions of {curse words and their variants}, rose 41% from full-year 2019 to 2021 through the end of November on Facebook and 27% on Twitter, according to Storyful, a news and intelligence agency. Storyful is owned by News Corp, the parent company of The Wall Street Journal.
Now, here’s what’s more interesting. The same article mentioned that people curse because of the following reasons:
- Cursing demonstrates comfort with someone else.
- Cursing proves you trust a person.
- Cursing relaxes a person.
- Swearing can convey a kind of grittiness.
- Swearing is good for branding.
- Swearing is an art.
These are the human reasoning why people curse and how more and more people are doing it, especially during this pandemic.
Now, as Christians, followers of the Messiah, we all know that cursing is a sin. It shouldn’t be part of our communication.
We read:
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
Ephesians 4:29
Cursing or swearing is completely unnecessary. You can convey your thoughts and feelings without those words or expressions.
Sadly, we will see more and more cursing in our society today and this has already been prophesied (II Timothy 3:1-6).
Thankfully, you don’t have to be part of the world. You have the choice to keep your language pure, clean, and godly.
