  1. Dear Joshua,

It is quite striking that you have written a book on the New Covenant. One might say, you have courage, as I personally know seasoned and well-experienced theologians who because they wisely recognize the magnitude and necessary wisdom of such an endeavor have never attempted such a feat.

What is perhaps the most striking characteristic of God? I mean, He is God, right? Is it that striking that He is omnipotent? He is God. I expect Him to be. Is it that striking that He is omniscient? Not really. He is God. Those comments are not motivated from a heart of dishonor to our Maker and Savior. I just simply expect those characteristics from the greatest Being in the universe.

What I do not expect from that all-powerful, all-knowing Being is that when Jesus came to earth, Paul says in Philippians 2 that He humbled Himself. The God who is all-knowing, omniscient God humbled Himself by submitting Himself to the arguments and decisions of men. Does that not strike you as somewhat odd for the greatest Being in the universe? If He truly is God, truly all-knowing, then why not just show up as a powerful, knowledgeable teacher to tell others the truth? Yet Jesus often listened, and then humbled Himself by using men’s logical arguments to reason with stubborn humanity. That to me is more than striking. In other words, even with His supreme power and the reality of being all-knowing, He humbled Himself to listen to wicked men. John tells us He knew the hearts of men (John 2:25). Yet, in His humility, He “considered others better than Himself.” https://biblehub.com/philippians/2-3.htm

How did He consider others better than Himself? Did He not ask sinful, wicked men questions? Do we not see this Godly characteristic even in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sinned? Rather than accuse them, did He not ask, Where are you? And then follow that up with more questions?

God’s word, indeed Jesus Himself, tells us as men with limited knowledge that we will give an account to Him for every careless word (Matt. 12:36 ESV). What does careless mean? Teachers, James writes, will be held to a higher judgment by God. Who is the person whom God looks upon (Isa. 66:2)?

So, how much “care” did you take in writing your book on the New Covenant? For God to write His Word, it took much patience – more than 1,500 years. How patient and careful were you? Did you get away on a quiet retreat of prayer and fasting (Isa. 30:15) with God to humble yourself? Then afterward, did you humbly submit your research, your assumptions and conclusions to have it questioned and critiqued? Peers who have studied for decades and know much more than you? Do have a seminary degree? If you are pulling your material from Protestant authors and commentators, why would you not submit your ideas, thoughts, and opinions to an educational degree from an institution so to learn from them? Wasn’t Jesus considered a Rabbi? What human and Jewish training was required to be a Rabbi? Even the critics of Jesus considered Him a Rabbi, or teacher. Why?

Paul tells Timothy that he as a leader is to make “every effort” to show himself approved to God (2 Tim 2:15)? Would that not mean humbling yourself before men like Jesus did by esteeming them better than yourself? Or do you really have God’s gift of truth to men? That would be rather arrogant to claim now, wouldn’t it? Since truth is by nature exclusive, how does one avoid the natural inference of being arrogant? How did Jesus handle that problem?

Jesus gave a serious warning to those who would make those of simple faith stumble and err, sin, and miss the mark, it would be better that a millstone were hung around their neck and they be cast into the midst of the sea (Luke 17:1-2).

That is sobering and humbling. I hope it is to you.

    • Hi Mark!

Thank you for your comment. You’re right, we must handle God’s word with much carefulness. In fact, God said that He looks on someone who trembles at His word.

Learning is a life-long process. The truth is that the new book is based on the teachings of various churches of God. I didn’t create it out of the blue, but rather I based it on various literature and publications by church groups who share the same belief as I have.

The things I wrote on the new book that I published is something I have believed since I was a child. What I did was I just compiled them and wrote them in one book.

I appreciate your comment, but rest assured, I did my best to write truths that I believe I can prove and defend.

      Regards,
      Joshua

Thanks for your honesty, Joshua. Writing as you have described above leads one to “group-think” a serious issue in the churches of God whom claim exclusivity to God’s truth from all other Jesus followers. I would highly recommend churches of God follow the example of Jesus. Nothing wrong with claims of exclusivity because truth implies exclusivity. Yet, COG doctrine has been found extremely lacking when held up to the truth of God’s word and better interpretative principles. Systematic interpretative principles do not exist in COG’s except to ask does it line up with Herbert Armstrong’s or WCG’s previous doctrines and teachings. Many of the progressive COG’S realize those former teachings are lacking. I would add, many are based on an eclectic compilation of various denominational doctrines.

I wish you the best in your search for truth.

      • Thanks for your reply, Mark! I appreciate your comment.

I’ve been with the Church of God since 2004. From there, I have learned a lot of things and some of them are not even taught in most COGs today. However, so far, from what I learn, I don’t see any error in the New Covenant teaching of COG. If you can point it out to me, I’ll be more than happy to study them further. But for now, I’ll stick to what I know is right and truth based on God’s word. You can always send me a message to joshuainfantado@gmail.com. to discuss further. 🙂
