What Thousands of Grounded Airplanes can Teach Us About Our Christian Calling

With the world in a complete halt, you might ask, whatever happens to the thousands of airplanes that find itself useless due to the pandemic? Most importantly, as Christians, what can we learn from these grounded planes?

Before the quarantine and lockdown ever happened, I always find myself looking up as a hear airplanes taking off from a nearby airport.

But now, you probably have seen how the skies are empty as thousands of small and huge airplanes have to be grounded wingtip to wingtip on storage facilities and runways.

According to one estimate, there are more than 16,000 passenger jets around the globe that have to be mandatorily grounded as people stay in their homes and avoid travels. That’s more than 60% of the world’s planes!

The most challenging job for airlines today is to keep their airplanes airworthy. If you are familiar with aircraft, they need a tremendous amount of maintenance just to ensure they are still usable when people start to travel once again.

Because flying people thousands of feet above the ground is a huge safety concern, aircraft maintenance personnel needs to keep airplanes in their peak condition even not in use.

From keeping the hydraulics smooth and fresh to ensuring insects and vermin not getting insider the flight-control systems, airlines are on their feet to save their airplanes from decay.

You see, airplanes are designed to fly.

They are not designed to stay on the ground.

Airplanes are much in danger when they are stagnant and not moving.

They are in better condition when they do what they are meant to do.

Now, why am I telling you this?

I’m telling you this because I want to illustrate a point for many of us who have lost their sense of purpose and direction.

So many people are afraid to fly.

They are afraid to move out of their comfort zone.

They are afraid of what people will say to them when they try to fly and fail.

So, they simply stay on the ground — waiting for the process of decay to complete its course.

As Christians, we are created for a higher purpose.

We are created not to simply accumulate wealth, buy properties, and pursue worldly ambitions.

We are not meant to simply settle down with the rewards we find here on the ground.

The Bible tells us:

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:1-2).

Don’t be like the airplanes who stayed on the ground.

You are meant to fly.

You are not meant to simply take root in this world by loving what is in the world and being a friend of the world.

Take the higher ground.

Set your mind on things above.

Fly above the things that the Gentiles seek.

Yes, taking off from the runway won’t be easy.

Like an airplane, you need to break the air barrier to propel yourself to the air and fly.

But once you’re in the air, you can look down and say, “The struggle has all been worth it. The reward from above is way greater than all the rewards combined from below.”

So, don’t lose heart.

If you feel like life is weighing you down and want to keep you on the ground…

Remember how Yahshua (Jesus Christ) already died for you and now is giving you a chance to eternal life.

You are not meant to simply pass through this earth.

You are here for a purpose and it is your life’s goal to fulfill it according to the will of our Heavenly Father.

Let me leave you with these words once again.

“Set your mind on the things above and not on the things on the earth.”
