11 Biblical Facts About Pride that You Probably Don’t Know

What does the Bible say about pride? In this post, let me share with you 10 passages in the Bible that tells you what pride is and how destructive it can be in your life.

Pride is among the deadliest sins.

It kills you from within.

It destroys not just yourself, but also other people around.

It can be glaringly obvious, but most of the time, it can be too difficult to detect.

Too difficult that it needs God and others to point it out to you.

These are some of the reasons why we must know more about this sin we call pride.

How do we overcome pride?

The first step is to know what it is.

And the best place to start understanding pride is the Holy Book – the Bible.

In this post, let us take a look at what the Bible says about pride.

What does the Bible say about pride?

1. Pride leads to disgrace

When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom (Proverbs 11:2).

Disgrace in this verse also means shame, dishonor, and reproach.

Because a proud man thinks so highly of himself, he will be brought down low.

2. Pride leads to destruction

Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16:18).

A proud person despises learning new things.

He also puts more importance on himself than his relationship with God and men.

As a result, destruction is waiting for him at the end of the road.

3. God hates evil pride

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate (Proverbs 8:13).

Pride is such a destructive sin that God hates it.

Pride leads to a lot of pain and feel sad when we suffer because of our pride.

4. God resists the proud

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).

Instead of us getting near to God and receiving a favor, God would instead oppose and resist us due to our pride.

5. The proud is an abomination to God

Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to YAHWEH;
Though they join forces, none will go unpunished (Proverbs 16:5).

The Hebrew word for abomination on this page means abhorrent and disgusting.

As you can see, you will realize how God truly hates pride.

Anyone who is infected with pride is considered abominable, disgusting, and abhorrent.

6. The proud don’t think about God

The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God;
God is in none of his thoughts (Psalm 10:4).

Because proud people think they are enough without God, they don’t seek Him anymore.

Proud people think they don’t need God.

They take pride in their abilities, skills, and talents – things that God, Himself, gave them.

Because of their illusion of self-sufficiency, they forsake God.

7. Proud people are deceived

The pride of your heart has deceived you,
You who dwell in the clefts of the rock,
Whose habitation is high;
You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ (Obadiah 1:3).

Because of the illusion of grandeur proud people have in themselves, they can’t see the truth.

They can’t see the fact that all of us came from dust and to dust we will return.

Sadly, proud people are deceived.

They don’t know that their true value comes from God and not in themselves.

8. Pride caused Satan to rebel

“How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
For you have said in your heart:
I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’
Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the lowest depths of the Pit (Isaiah 14:12-15).

Satan was created with intense beauty and brilliance (Ezekiel 28:11-15).

Because of this, he thought that he is good enough to dethrone God.

He even thinks he is better than God!

As you can see, pride can truly deceive not just people, but also Satan.

He thought that he can successfully rebel against God.

Obviously, he will fail as YAHWEH is the supreme Ruler of the entire universe.

No one can beat him.

Yet, Satan thought he can and because of pride, he rebelled.

It has caused him his downfall.

9. God brings down the proud

The lofty looks of man shall be humbled,
The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down,
And YAHWEH alone shall be exalted in that day (Isaiah 2:11).

If you are proud, God can’t use you.

He needs to humble you first so you can submit to His will and purpose in your life.

That’s why those who are proud need to be bowed down and humbled.

Those who resist will suffer destruction.

10. Pride causes strife

By pride comes nothing but strife,
But with the well-advised is wisdom.

Proud people don’t like to be defeated.

They will do everything to look good and right to other people.

As a result, pride goes in the way of repairing relationships.

Pride promotes strife, quarrel, and trouble.

In fact, there would have been no war in this world if it isn’t because of pride.

11. Proud people are more hopeless than fools

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him (Proverbs 26:12).

Pride prevents learning.

People who think they are wise are in most cases, wrong.

They are too proud to admit they don’t know everything.

Because of this, there is more hope for a fool than proud people.

Final words

As you can see, the Bible tells us that pride in one’s self isn’t good.

The Bible is clear that pride leads to a lot of bad things and ultimately to your own physical and spiritual destruction.

It is time that you examine yourself.

See if pride has unknowingly crept in your life.

Every time you feel the need to glorify yourself instead of God, stop and think.

Remember how deadly pride can be.

A little pride can easily become big to the point that you can’t manage it anymore.

So, do your best.

Stay close to God.

Aim to become humble in every aspect of your life.

When you do, God will exalt you when the right time comes.

  1. Pride is deadly and destructive. I’ve been guilty of being prideful, especially when it comes to work. In all 49 places in the Bible, pride is never mentioned as a good thing. The most familiar scripture about pride is often quoted incorrectly as “Pride goes before the fall.” Proverbs 16:18 is actually “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” The only solution to pride is humility. C.S. Lewis wrote:
    “If pride is an exalted sense of who we are in relationship to God and others, humility is having a realistic sense of who we are before God and others.” Good read. Thanks.

    • Hi Michael!

      Thanks for your comment. Pride is truly a common problem for many. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I, too, struggle with pride at times. It comes up every once in a while without warning.

    • Substitute Atheism for pride or ‘Satan’ in these passages. The Bible defers to the first principle, “There is but ONE GOD”
