Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Not Celebrate Mardi Gras

Should Christians celebrate Mardi Gras? Here are the top 5 compelling reasons why you shouldn’t celebrate it!

Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday and Shrove Tuesday, is a popular celebration among many Christians, particularly in the Catholic Church.

Because of the allure of Mardi Gras, it has also made its way in the secular celebration, which means even non-believers are seen to be participating in it.

As popular as it may sound, you may want to consider what Mardi Gras is all about.

Should Christians celebrate Mardi Gras?

What does the Bible say about Mardi Gras?

Is God happy or pleased when Christians celebrate it?

In this post, let me answer those questions by giving you 5 reasons why you should NOT celebrate Mardi Gras.

Top 5: Mardi Gras promotes drunkenness

Aside from gluttony, do you know what else is abundant during Mardi Gras?

That’s right – alcoholic drinks and beverages.

So, it’s not just food that we are talking about here.

During Mardi Gras, it is common to see a lot of drunk people getting wasted on the streets or in their homes.

In the Bible, gluttons and drunkards are almost always being condemned at the same time.

That’s why, when we read about drunkards, you can also read gluttons mentioned alongside.

Observe what Deuteronomy 21:20 tells us:

And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’

I Corinthians 10:7 tells us the attitude of people who don’t believe in the resurrection of Yahshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ):

If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

These and other Bible passages undoubtedly condemn drunkenness.

This sin leads to a lot of trouble.

A one night of drunkenness leads to a lifetime of trouble and misery.

Top 4: Mardi Gras promotes gluttony

As was mentioned above, Mardi Gras happens before Lent.

There’s a good reason why they call Mardi Gras as Fat Tuesday.

During Lent – a 40-day event –  devotees are instructed to abstain from meat and certain kinds of food.

Because of this, a lot of people see Mardi Gras as their “last” chance to enjoy the taste of meat.

So, they eat and eat and eat during Mardi Gras just to satisfy their flesh, in the hopes that they would have enough strength to go through the Lenten season.

If you ask me, it is such a RIDICULOUS and STUPID way of preparing for something they consider as holy, sacred, and important season.

The Bible tells us that those who are considered “enemies of the cross of Christ” are gluttons.

We read Philippians 3:17-19:

Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.

You need to ask yourself, is your belly your god?

Isn’t Mardi Gras promote this wrong kind of thinking?

Isn’t it time for true Christians to stop celebrating this pagan and spiritually destructive festival?

Top 3: Mardi Gras promotes losing of self-control

Mardi Gras is commonly seen as an opportunity to let go of inhibitions and satisfy fleshly desires and lusts.

Perhaps, you have seen a parade of Mardi Gras where a lot of participants are dressed inappropriately and indecently.

During parties, people wear masks so others won’t recognize them.

Since people can’t see their faces, they eliminate the sense of accountability.

They have more freedom to do whatever they want.

After all, they have masks to cover who they are.

Moreover, like what was mentioned above, people lose control over their desires for food and drinks.

As a result, a lot of them overeat and consume too many alcoholic drinks.

It isn’t proper for any Christian to throw away self-restraint and do whatever they please.

Such behavior would only result in a lot of pain and suffering in the future.

Proverbs 25:28 tells us:

Whoever has no rule over his own spirit

Is like a city broken down, without walls.

If you are serious about your Christian calling, you wouldn’t even consider being part of Mardi Gras.

Top 2: Mardi Gras has pagan roots

To truly understand what Mardi Gras is all about, you need to read a little of history.

For one, please note that Mardi Gras is actually celebrated not just in one specific day.

In some countries, the celebration starts in January and culminates in the day before the Lent Season starts.

If you read the history of Mardi Gras, you will soon see its pagan origin.

According to historians, Mardi Gras has been around before Christianity existed.

It is a pagan celebration of fertility and spring.

Some scholars noted how similar Mardi Gras is to the chaotic and messy Roman festivals of Lupercalia and Saturnalia.

Because of the extreme popularity of these pagan celebrations, the Catholic church had a hard time getting rid of it.

When their effort was proven useless, they resort to syncretism – the practice of blending pagan practices to Christian practices.

If there’s one thing this decision has accomplished, it is the successful infiltration of paganism in Christian worship.

Instead of converting paganism to Christianity, it is Christianity that has converted to paganism!

What a sad state of Christianity today!

No wonder that the Christianity of the first century is truly different from the Christianity we have now.

What does God say about incorporating pagan worship to Christian worship?

We clearly read how God HATES this practice. Deuteronomy 12:29-32 tells us:

“When the Yahweh your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’

You shall not worship Yahweh your God in that way; for every ABOMINATION to Yahweh which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.

“Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall NOT add to it nor take away from it.

I hope you see the seriousness of the Almighty when He proclaimed these words.

True worship brings you closer to God.

False worship, such as Mardi Gras, does NOT bring you closer to God.

You simply need to have a closer look at what happens in Mardi Gras and you will soon see how this festival is truly anti-God.

Top 1: Mardi Gras promotes the wrong type of repentance

All of us are called to repentance.

However, there are fake repentance and true repentance.

True and genuine repentance is asking for forgiveness and having the willing heart to change your ways.

However, this is not the type of repentance Mardi Gras is promoting.

Instead, it promotes the wrong kind of repentance.

It promotes the sin-now-and-repent-later mentality.

It encourages its participants to perform sinful activities.

After all, they can simply repent a day after Mardi Gras.

Such a silly and stupid assumption put a lot of Christian into spiritual snare – a trap that is difficult to get free from.

The Almighty God wants us to avoid sin at all costs.

He wants us to hate sin as much as He hates it.

Participating in Mardi Gras isn’t hating sin.

It is tolerating and indulging in sin.

The Bible clearly tells us in Romans 13:13:

Let us walk properly, as in the day, NOT in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.

For God, it ISN’T enough to simply put away our sinful and fleshly desires.

We must also take note of verse 14 where it says:

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make NO provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Never ever think that sin doesn’t have any negative consequences – that these consequences will be gone the moment you repent.

Whatever you do, it will have consequences.

Yes, God can forgive you if you have the right attitude, but the consequences of your sin are more often than not will stay for you to suffer.

Should Christians celebrate Mardi Gras?

The short answer is no.

Christians shouldn’t celebrate Mardi Gras for the reasons I have shared with you above.

Don’t think that Mardi Gras is a harmless celebration.

It is actually harmful to you both physically and spiritually.

God, in His word, shows us that He HATES pagan celebrations.

Mardi Gras has pagan roots and it is no wonder that we see a lot of its negative consequences.

If it is of God, it should edify us more.

But as you have already observed, Mardi Gras brings us farther from God.

The Bible gave us a stern warning if we still choose to celebrate Mardi Gras after knowing the truth.

We read in Galatians 5:19-21:

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

If you continue with the works of the flesh which are evidently promoted in Mardi Gras, as Paul wrote, you are in danger of not inheriting the Kingdom of God.

This is a serious matter that each of us should consider.

Don’t let Mardi Gras and other worldly and paganistic festivals take away your salvation.

But rather, “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” Romans 12:1-2).

  1. Very powerful and convicting. Thank you for sharing this. As Christians, sometimes we forget to look into the deeper meaning behind many of the popular celebrations. I was on the verge of creating something to sell to help celebrate Mardi Gras and felt in my spirit to look up what this holiday was about. Now that I know better, I will not proceed with my initial plan. Doing a U-turn! Thanks again and God bless!

  2. Mardi Gras is indeed not of THE GOD OF THE BIBLE, but a lot of Christians jump on board with any and every thing because they don’t do their homework and see how it may or may not be for we the Christian. IT is sad that we just as a lot of people that proclaim to be of GOD, TAKE HIM FOR GRANTED.
