Why You Need To Be A Diligent Christian

Here is a blog about the importance of diligence in the life of Christians. Discover the role of diligence in your faith and how you ought to work for the glory of God!

Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, once said:

“Diligence is the mother of good luck.”

As a Christian, I refuse to believe in good luck. I believe luck does not have anything to do with your achievements in life. It is through God’s grace and blessings that we are able to improve our lives.

Instead of luck, I would rather say:

“Diligence is the mother of success.”

Why not? You can’t be successful in this life without diligence.

Doing things diligently means you are not lazy. You do your job with great care and ensuring that you give your best with each task assigned to you. Diligence is doing your work even when motivation wears out or when you don’t feel like working anymore.

Diligence is a quality of the disciples of Christ

One of the most important lessons we can learn from the disciples of Yahshua is diligence. This simple but practical lesson can easily be overlooked when you read the Gospels. Nevertheless, it’s an important lesson for every person who wishes to become a follower of Christ.

Majority of Christ’s disciples were fishermen. These include Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

We read in the Bible how these fishermen were diligent in their work.

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him (Matthew 4:18-22).

As you can see, these disciples of Christ were not lazy. When Yahshua found them, they were busy doing their job. In fact, these men are people of business. They were employed, not someone who is irresponsible and unreliable.

The disciples were diligent, hardworking, and industrious. If not, then Christ would not have chosen them.

In the same way, Christians today are not to be lazy. Whenever as possible, we must not be a burden to others, but rather, through the fruits of our labor, we become a blessing to them.

More than just hard work

The Apostle Paul later would write:

“But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (I Timothy 5:8).

You see, being industrious and diligent is not simply a matter of principle, but a matter of faith. If you are not doing your job and is not able to provide for your family, you are guilty of denying your faith.

In effect, being lazy literally means you are denouncing your faith!

That’s how important it is to become diligent and productive as Christians. You might proclaim to be a follower of Christ, but if you don’t provide for your family or for yourself, then you are simply doing a lip-service.

The life of a fisherman is difficult. They are always accustomed to the dangers of water. They are often wet, tired, and cold. As a laborious job, being a fisherman has prepared the disciples to become a follower of Christ who knew how to endure hardships.

Thus, if you want to be a disciple of the Master, then you also need to be diligent in your work.

Doing your best in everything you do

Ecclesiastes 9:10 tells us:

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”

The wisest king of Israel tells us that we must give our best when it comes to doing our job.

Why?

Because once we die, we can’t work anymore.

King Solomon is telling us that we must do whatever we need to do while we are able. When we approach death, when we age and can’t even walk upright, we will not be able to perform our work with the same energy and might.

Take advantage of your energy. Don’t let it go to waste. Being lazy will not do you any good, but only harm.

Ants, prosperity, and working for Yahshua

In Proverbs, King Solomon consider diligence as man’s precious possession (Proverbs 12:27). He further wrote:

The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty,
But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty (Proverbs 21:5).

If you are diligent, you won’t go hungry. Being industrious in your work leads to prosperity. Sometimes, poverty is our own doing. Perhaps, being diligence is the only thing you are missing right now for you to gain financial freedom. Maybe, it is only diligence that will help you become more successful in life.

King Solomon further instructs us to learn from the ants. He wrote in Proverbs 6:6-11:

Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
Which, having no captain,
Overseer or ruler,
Provides her supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
How long will you slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—
So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
And your need like an armed man.

A lot of wisdom written on this passage.

As you study the life of the ants, you would see how busy they are. In fact, it is RARE for you to find an ant who is lazy. If ever you find one, it is probably a dead ant!

It always amazes me how diligent ants are. Even if there’s no overseer, they still continue to work. Whether someone is watching them or not, they are still doing their job.

This reminds of what the Apostle Paul wrote in Colossians 3:22:24:

Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in SINCERITY of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; FOR YOU SERVE THE LORD CHRIST.

Paul is telling us not to simply work when somebody is looking. He is telling us that we must work as if our boss is Yahshua. We need to praise God through the way we perform our job.

NO doubt, we can learn a lot of lessons from the ants. Oh, how I wish we can become like the ants when it comes to our work. If not, we will be like the sluggard of whom King Solomon talked about.

They love to sleep and procrastinate to the point that poverty would eventually claim their life. They love to make excuses and do whatever it takes to avoid work.

If we are to be disciples of Christ, we need to learn from the ant. We need to be diligent and do our best in whatever our hands find to do.

Will you be diligent?

Do you take your tasks seriously?

Do you see the value of your job and how it can help you provide for yourself and others?

Do you recognize the importance of diligence in your Christian life?

It is my sincerest hope that your answer to these questions is yes.

Being diligent in this life will not only benefit you temporarily but also in the life to come. Even in our spirituality, we are instructed to be diligent in keeping the commandments of Yahweh (Deuteronomy 6:17).

If we don’t give up, Yahshua will give us the crown of life (Revelation 2:10) – the greatest reward for our diligence.
