I read a Chinese proverb before and it stuck with me to this day.

The proverb goes like this:

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

I believe this teaches us about how important it is for us to answer God’s calling with a strong urgency.

When God calls you, when is the best time to answer it?

The obvious answer is NOW.

The disciples’ sense of urgency

When Yahshua called his disciples, notice their response.

We read in Matthew 4:18-22:

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Did you see that? The response of these men were astonishing!

They didn’t wait for a few minutes, hours, or days. When Christ called them, they didn’t think twice. They immediately left their nets, boat, and even loved ones just to follow Christ!

Giving it all for God’s calling

Peter, Andrew, James, and John were more than willing to follow Christ. They could have thought of a thousand reasons to decline the call of Jesus. James could have thought of his job, family, prior commitments, and personal ambitions in life.

But no, they were ready to forsake everything to follow Christ.

Can the same thing be said to us?

When God calls us, do we procrastinate? Do we delay? Do we simply ignore God’s calling as much as we can?

I hope not.

Now, there’s a great and wonderful lesson that we should learn from how the disciples of Christ responded to His call.

First of all, Jesus is inviting us to FOLLOW HIM.

If there’s one call in your life that you should answer seriously and sincerely, it would be Christ’s call to follow Him.

Did you see the sense of urgency of the disciples of Yahshua? Not only did they follow Christ, but they “left their nets,” signifying their complete surrender of their lives to God’s hands.

They have left their source of income and their livelihood to become fishers of men.

They must now live a separate and holy life, dedicated to doing the will of God.

Why we must not delay

Why do we need to answer God’s call promptly and with a sense of urgency?

Romans 13:11 tells us:

“And do this, knowing the time, that NOW it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.”

Did you get that?

Now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

As we look around us, we see signs that the return of our Messiah will be imminent. The world stage is being set to fulfill Biblical prophecies and usher in the second coming of our great King.

However, even if Christ won’t return yet, we must still be always ready.

Why?

Because no one of us really knows when our life would end. It could be tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year.

Knowing this very fact of life, wouldn’t it be wise to focus on the one main goal of our life, which is to be part of God’s Kingdom?

 When God calls us, we need to answer it immediately. We must not delay any further. Let us live according to God’s will and purpose in our lives today!

Make the best decision of your life

The sooner you answer God’s calling, the better you will be able to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering in this world.

Some people think that following God will take away their freedom. They thought that the way to happiness is simply following their own human nature and do what they think is best for them.

However, many people have taken this path and ended up empty, sad, and even miserable.

By answering God’s calling today, you are making the BEST decision of your life. Living this life with God is tremendously different when you live it by yourself.

With God, everything suddenly has a purpose. No matter what happens in your life, you know that you can go through it with God strengthening you.

The disciples made a life-changing decision that day. Answer God’s calling and your life will never be the same again!
