Friends, what are you thinking right now? What occupies your mind? What are the thoughts in your mind that drive you to do something? Whatever your answer is, you can’t deny the fact that your thoughts shape your reality.

As a plant could not exist without a seed, so is our action without our thoughts.

Perhaps, there are a few exemptions to that, but the truth remains; our thoughts could affect how we live our lives.

how to become positive in life

The mind as a piece of a vacant lot

Our mind is like a vacant lot. You can either cultivate it with good seed and let it produce beautiful flowers and delicious fruits OR you can simply neglect that lot and let it produce weeds, wild grass, and undesirable plants.

Either way, whether you cultivate or neglect your vacant lot, it will produce plants. Whether you like it or not, you will produce something.

The question now is, “Will it be good plants or bad plants?”

You know brethren, it is so easy to go through life and plant the seeds of doubt, fear, resentment, frustration, bitterness, blame, depression, and other negative stuff in your garden.

However, we need to realize brethren, that when our mind is filled with negative thoughts, IT PUSHES OUT THE POSITIVE THOUGHTS. The more negative thoughts that you have, the lesser space is left for the positive ones.

You can’t simply say, “I will find another vacant lot” or “I will just expand my lot.” No, you are given only one lot and you can’t go beyond your boundary. Whatever you do with your lot, that’s what you are going to reap.

Galatians 6:7 tells us:

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”

If you sow good thoughts, then you will also reap good thoughts. If you reap bad thoughts, then you will reap bad thoughts.

You have the power to choose your thoughts

Thus, it is no wonder that a lot of people today feel unmotivated, uninspired, and hopeless. Why? Because they have planted negative seeds of thought in their mind.

They focus more on the problem rather than the solution.

They focus more on the things that they don’t have, rather than the things that they have.

They focus more on the things that could go wrong, rather than the things that could go right.

Friends, the Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 30:19:

“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore CHOOSE LIFE, that both you and your descendants may live.”

For years, we have seen this verse to simply mean that we must follow God instead of the enemy. However, this verse also tells us one important truth about our lives and it is this: We have the power to choose our thoughts.

quote about choosing what we think

Though we might not always have the control of what goes into our mind, we always have the choice to which thoughts should stay.

Deuteronomy 30:19 is telling us that we have the power to choose life – to choose happiness instead of sadness; to find the positive in every negative situation; to choose faith rather than worry and doubt; to choose love rather than hate; to choose peace rather than getting even with our enemies.

When a co-worker got a promotion you worked so hard for, you can either be bitter or be happy for that person. You can either question God or trust Him that He has something way better than that promotion.

When you’re stuck in traffic, you can either curse the drivers around you, the government, the traffic light, and the traffic enforcer or you can simply be patient, meditate upon God’s goodness in your life, or reflect on how blessed you are right now – still breathing, could still walk, talk, in good health, and have money in your wallet.

When a person hurts you with words – he has insulted you and humiliated you. You can either fight back and say meaner and nastier words or you can take the high road, simply move on, and let God fight your battles for you.

I can go on and on and share with you a lot of examples, but my point is clear: you can choose the seeds of thoughts that you cultivate in your mind.

Like what Deuteronomy 19 tells us, choose life – choose love, peace, joy, gratitude, hope, patience, and positivity.

What should we think about?

Philippians 4:8, a familiar scripture, tell us:

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthyMEDITATE ON THESE THINGS.”

Now, can you imagine what will happen if you fill your mind with things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, and virtue?

You will have a beautiful mind!

You don’t think about gossips anymore; you always look at the good side of every person you know; nothing offends you; you have a better outlook in life; you feel more motivated, happy, and blessed.

Transformation through renewing of the mind

Now, having this kind of thinking does not come naturally. In fact, it takes a lot of time and energy to fill your mind with good seed, uproot weeds, and keep it beautiful.

That’s why we read in Romans 12:1-2 the importance of transforming our mind:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The Apostle Paul is telling us not to be conformed to this world because this world is full of NEGATIVITY. It is full of pride, envy, jealousy, greed, resentment, bitterness, and all sorts of negative things.

Paul is telling is not to be conformed to the world, but INSTEAD, we must be transformed. The Greek word used here is metamorphoo – the same word where we get the word metamorphosis.

When you hear the word metamorphosis, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Most probably, it is the butterfly.

The journey of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly is called metamorphosis. Now, let’s pretend that you haven’t seen a butterfly before and I’ll tell you that a crawling, ugly caterpillar can become a flying beautiful butterfly, would you believe me? Maybe, but it’s something that is too difficult to believe.

The transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly shows us the type of transformation that we must have.

Now that we are called out from the world, it is the time to transform our lives just like the complete transformation we see in a butterfly. We have been called out from the world as a caterpillar but now, we must begin our journey to become a butterfly.

But, how do we transform our lives? Paul tells us, “but be transformed by the RENEWING of your mind.”

If we are to change the outward, we must first change the inward.

If you want to be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, we must renew our mind first.

Why does it says renew? Because our mind has become an ugly, dilapidated, old piece of land full of weeds, thorns, and poison. The word renew here comes from the Greek word, anakainosis, which literally means to renovate.

When you renovate a house, you need to get rid of the old. Get rid of the ugly parts of the house. Now, does it stop there? Of course not!

When you renovate, you also add NEW things there. As they say, “Out with the old and in with the new.”

So, it is not enough to simply get rid of the negative stuff in your mind. You also need to fill it with the good things.

You get rid of hate; you add love.

You get rid of bitterness; you add sweetness.

You get rid of chaos; you add peace.

You get rid of doubts and worries; you add trust and faith.

You get rid of envy and jealousy; you add contentment and gratitude.

You get rid of pride; you add humility.

How does your mind look like?

Friends, I would like to ask you, “If your mind is a piece of land, how does it look like?”

Is it filled with sunshine, flowers, fruit-bearing trees, greeneries, and beauty? Or is it filled with thorns, weeds, poisonous plants, and darkness?

I hope it is the former.

Keep a negative thought in your mind long enough and eventually, it will destroy the beauty of your garden. Even a slightly small negative thought, when you harbor it long enough, will poison your whole mind. So, be careful of your thoughts.

I hope friends, we strive to plant good seeds in our mind so we can also enjoy good plants and good produce. It is my sincerest hope that we are able to choose life and the positive things that come with it.

I want to leave you with this profound and insightful quote. I know you have heard or read this before, but it is so relevant to this message that I just need to end it with this quote.

Let me read:

“Watch your thoughts, they become words;
watch your words, they become actions;
watch your actions, they become habits;
watch your habits, they become character;
watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
