The majority of Christians today believe that tithing, the practice of giving a tenth to God’s ministry, is obsolete. In fact, in one study, it is found out that only 5% of Americans give tithes.

However, if you come to think about it, the issue is NOT whether tithing is relevant or not, but rather, the real issue is whether you have enough faith to tithe or not.

The Bible plainly tells that we still need to give our tithes and offerings. It is not the purpose of this blog to discuss how the Bible upholds that tithing should still be practiced today, but I highly recommend that you read, “Top 10 Surprising Reasons Why You Should Tithe.”

Here is something that I want all of us to ponder upon: tithing is an act of faith.

Many people today struggle with the thought of giving a tenth of their income to God. After all, you have worked hard for your money. You have endured long hours of work just to earn a living. To make things even more difficult, if you are having financial troubles, tithing can easily be kicked to the side and become the last priority or if ever it has been a priority in the first place.

Thus, it is not surprising to see a lot of people come up with different excuses to avoid giving their tithes. Sadly, some would even twist scriptures just to accommodate what they want to believe.

So, how is tithing an act of faith?

It is an act of faith because it is a demonstration of your complete dependence on God. It is telling God that you can give Him the tenth of your income and still be able to live a blessed life.

The Bible tells us:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO.”

The question now for you is, “Where is your heart?”

You can answer that question by looking at where your treasure is. There’s nothing wrong in using our money for ourselves. After all, God also wants us to enjoy the fruit of our labor.

If your main goal in life is to get rich and simply enjoy all the pleasures this world could offer, then your heart isn’t right with God.

However, if you make a god out of your money, that’s where the problem lies and one of the best ways to make money your god is not to tithe.

God equates failure to tithe as robbing Him. Malachi 3:8 explicitly tells us:

Will a man rob God?
Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say,
‘In what way have we robbed You?’
IN TITHES AND OFFERINGS.”

A lot of people today, Christians and non-Christians alike are robbing God. The sad thing is, they don’t even know it!

So, are you robbing God? Aside from having your heart in the wrong place, are you breaking God’s Seventh Commandment (Exodus 20:15)? Are you putting your money between you and God? Are you making an idol out of your money?

I hope not.

Because of our human nature, it is not easy for many of us to give, especially to God whom we can’t see. However, there’s an amazing statement that God gave regarding the power of tithing.

We read in Malachi 3:10-12:

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
AND TRY ME NOW IN THIS,”
Says the LORD of hosts,
“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.

“And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,”
Says the LORD of hosts;
“And all nations will call you blessed,
For you will be a delightful land,”
Says the LORD of hosts.

Did you catch that? God is saying, “PROVE ME NOW! TEST ME! TRY ME!”

It is not always that we see God making bold statements like this. It is not often that we read God daring us to do something.

God is telling us to try Him in the aspect of tithing. If we tithe, He said, that He gives us so many blessings that we don’t have enough room to receive it. Not only that, but He will divinely protect us from evil and ensure that our livelihood would prosper.

When this happens, my friend, what will happen? Malachi 3 tells us that people who will see us will call us blessed and a delightful “land”.

Now, who had said these remarkable things? Did I say it? Is it your pastor or neighbor? Did I just make this one up?

OF COURSE NOT!

If you read Malachi 3:10-12, you will read the phrase “says the LORD of hosts” repeated three times! It is Yahweh, the Supreme Ruler of this entire universe, who pronounced these blessings!

Here are the questions for you to answer:

“Will you have faith?”

“Will you trust God by giving your tithe?”

“Will you let God perform a miracle in your life today?”

I can personally attest to the power of tithing. Ever since I started working, I always strive to give a tenth of my income.

The blessings of God have been amazing. I never came to the point that I didn’t have anything to eat. When I thought that I won’t have enough money to last me a month, a friend would give me money or someone will arrive and provide what I need.

Now, that’s not all. The blessings of God do not only come in the form of money, but it also comes in the form of good health, good relationship, and peace of mind.

Tithing is truly an act of faith. It is putting your trust in God and knowing that He will provide all your needs.

So, will you trust God? It is my sincerest hope that you will.

  1. Another great post! My husband and I became Christians 4.5 years ago. About 6 months into our journey, we started tithing. We tithed when things were good financially, and we tithed through unemployment. Tithing is trusting God to provide and we’ve seen His provisions faithfully.

    • Awesome! I’m sure God will bless you even more because that’s exactly what He said in the Bible. Just keep the faith. We live by faith and not by sight. As long as we doing God’s will in our lives, I’m sure, He will not forsake us.
