Psalm 27 is such a wonderful passage that it allows us to see God’s divine providence and protection to His people through the poetic and beautiful writing of King David.

Psalm 27 is composed of 14 verses. Each verse is packed with profound meaning and deep insights into the nature of God and how His people can trust Him in times of need.

10 ASTONISHING LESSONS WE LEARN FROM PSALM 27
What are the lessons we can learn from Psalm 27?

Lesson no. 1: We must not be afraid

The opening statement of Psalm 27 is nothing short of inspirational. We read in verse 1:

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?

Here, King David proclaims that there is nothing he should be afraid of. The reason? The LORD is his light and salvation. He is also the strength of His life.

As Christians, we know how easy it is to fear. There are just too many things to be afraid of today.

As we live in this world that gets more and more dangerous each day, we are afraid of known and unknown threats. We are also afraid of what the future brings. We are afraid of losing our job, family, health, and possessions. We are even afraid of losing our life.

[Please be sure to read, “7 Biblical Keys to Overcoming Fear.”]

God is our salvation not just in whom we are safe, but also in whom we are saved.
God is our salvation not just in whom we are safe, but also in whom we are saved.

In this life, we can have the confidence in God that He will protect us from all forms of evil. God provides us with the light to overcome darkness. He is our salvation in which we are saved. He is our Strength and He supplies us with our needed vitality to finish our Christian race.

With all these in mind, what else is there for us to be afraid of?

Is there still a need to fear, knowing that God is on our side?

Should we still be afraid of what men can do to us when we know that God, the most powerful Being in the entire universe, has our best interest in mind?

Obviously, we need not fear because God is with us and that is more than enough to give us the confidence that God will send us help in times of need.

The psalmist further mentioned in verses 2-3:

When the wicked came against me
To eat up my flesh,
My enemies and foes,
They stumbled and fell.
Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.

King David knows exactly what it means to be in the midst of danger. For a good number of his life, he has become a hunted man. The king of his beloved nation sought to kill him. He fought a lot of battles. Later in his life, his own son rebelled against him and forced him to abandon his kingdom.

If there’s one person who knows what it feels like to have an army encamping against him, that would be David. He has a lot of enemies who tried to “eat up his flesh.” He spent a lot of sleepless nights trying to flee from his enemies.

David knew the value of having God as his Protector. David knew what it’s like to be in danger and he definitely knew how God has delivered him many times.

In the same manner, as Christians today, we can have the full confidence that God will also deliver us as long as it is part of His will and purpose. Most importantly, God can deliver us from eternal death and bring us to eternal life.

Lesson no. 2: God is our Light

What does it mean for God to be our light? It means that He guides and directs our path.

How?

Through his word.

We read:

Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path (Psalm 119:105).

As you can see, by reading God’s word, the Bible, we obtain the guiding light that we need. The more we read God’s word, the brighter our light becomes.

Moreover, God is the Source of the true light. It means that if you want to be a light of the world, you need to obtain your light from Him. You can’t create your own light and beam it to other people.

Finally, when the Bible says that God is our light, it means that He is our Protector. As light overcomes darkness, God reigns victorious over evil. God is way more powerful than the enemy.

If Satan uses darkness against us, we can always have the Light of God defending us. [Click to tweet!]

As long as we stay in God’s light, we should always reign victorious as well.

Lesson no. 3: God is our salvation

Salvation is such a big word. So, you might ask, what does it mean to have God as our salvation?

If you look into Hebrew word of salvation, you would read, “Yesha.” Does that sound familiar? Yes, it sounds like the name of our Messiah, Yeshua or Yahshua which actually means, Yah or God is my salvation.

Yesha, the Hebrew word for Salvation, means “liberty, deliverance, prosperity: – safety, salvation, saving” (Strong’s Dictionary).

When the Bible says “God is our salvation”, it means that He saves us. He gives us life, not just physical, but spiritual life!

Through Christ’s atoning sacrifice, salvation is not just limited to the nation of Israel but is extended to all people who respond to God’s calling.

Salvation isn’t something you earn. It is not something you receive because of how righteous you are. Instead, it is a gift from God. It is through God’s grace that we are given the chance to salvation. It is not because of something we did, but it is because of God’s perfect and unending love toward us.

Having God as our salvation does not only have a significance in the future. It also has an effect on our present time. God is salvation because He saves us from danger, diseases, and our enemies.

God is our salvation not just in whom we are safe, but also in whom we are saved. [Click to tweet!]

Lesson no. 4: God is our strength

Ever wonder what it means for God as our strength?

It means that God is there to support us. When we are weak, tired, and about to give up, we can always turn to God and obtain strength from Him.

Life itself is fragile and feeble. In fact, we can easily get discouraged and weigh down with a lot of worries and troubles. However, since we have God as our strength, we are given supernatural support, a divine power that allows us to carry on.

Deuteronomy 31:8 assures us:

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

Lesson no. 5: Our ultimate desire is to be with God

King David has already determined his ultimate goal in life. He knows exactly his purpose in life. In short, he has found his magnificent obsession.

We read in verse 4 of Psalm 27:

One thing I have desired of the LORD,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD,
And to inquire in His temple.

David made it clear for us to see the desire of his heart. He shows us what that one thing he seeks. What he greatly longs for is to dwell in the house of the Yahweh, the Eternal. He wants to be there not just for a few hours, days, or months, but he wants to dwell in the house of the Eternal in all his days.

Being in the house of Yahweh brings a lot of great rewards. Being in the house of God allows you to behold His beauty, which equates to God’s splendor, pleasantness, grace, and favor.

Not only that, but being in God’s temple or tabernacle allows you to find answers to life’s greatest questions. You can seek instructions from God, obtain godly wisdom, and most importantly, learn God’s will in your life.

As Christians today, our ultimate goal in life is not really about getting rich, climbing the corporate ladder, graduating with honors, gaining the respect of other people, or becoming successful in life.

Now, don’t get me wrong, those things aren’t bad of itself. Actually, you should aim for those things as well. However, they should only be means to an end. They are just tools that we should use to obtain salvation.

Like King David, our desire in life should be to be in God’s house – to be part of His divine family and Kingdom. No greater reward you can receive both now and in the days to come than having eternal life and spending it in the Kingdom of God.

Lesson no. 6: God is our refuge

When danger and affliction surround us, God will be our refuge, shelter, and sanctuary. King David very well understood it.

He wrote in Psalm 27:5:

For in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock.

God will not only bring us to a safe place, but He would also serve as our hiding place. [Click to tweet!]

He becomes our place of safety.

[To learn more, please read, “What does it mean to dwell in the secret place of the Most High”?]

It is quite interesting how David speaks of how God hides him and yet, sets him high upon a rock. It only shows the confidence of David in God’s protection.

Even if God would put him in plain view, his enemies are still powerless. All they can do is look up and stare at David.

Notice that God puts honor to His servants. He sets him not on sand or any unstable platform, but on a rock – not just a rock, but a rock so high where the stormy sea could not reach it.

David stands on a firm footing. The rock will not sink. It gives him balance and he will not fall.

He will not stumble.

He would look down his enemies and feel safe knowing that God is his Protector. Standing on a high rock signifies victory and even rulership over his enemies.

What a beautiful portrayal of God serving as our refuge. God knows His people and if we are His, we can also enjoy the same protection and refuge which David has also experienced.

Lesson no. 7: We must continually praise God

Because of God’s protection and how He lifted His servant above the enemies, David was moved to praise and worship God. We read in verse 6:

what does it mean for God to be our hiding place?
what does it mean for God to be our hiding place?

And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me;
Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the LORD.

When we think of God’s goodness, mercy, and love, it should drive us to praise Him even more. We can’t even comprehend how God works in our lives and how He has preserved us until this day. We must then be filled with thankfulness in our hearts and sing His praises!

Lesson no. 8: We must actively pray to God

God is gracious, kind, and loving. However, this does not automatically mean that He will grant us protection without doing our part.

We must seek to develop a close relationship with God and this is achieved through prayer. King David won’t be called a friend of God if he wasn’t praying constantly. It would be impossible to develop a close relationship with God without praying.

Thus, in this Psalm of David, we read one of his prayers in verse 7-13:

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice!
Have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
When You said, “Seek My face,”
My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.”
Do not hide Your face from me;
Do not turn Your servant away in anger;
You have been my help…
Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.
Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries;
For false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.
I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.

David asks for God’s mercy and deliverance and this should also be expected from us. If you and I want God’s help, we need to ask for it. As Yahshua or Jesus Christ taught us, “Seek and you will find.”

David is serious in his prayer. He isn’t praying half asleep as some of us would do. He isn’t praying a memorized and repetitive prayer as the customs of the heathens.

His prayer is heartfelt and he simply pours forth his emotions to God. He is not afraid to share his thoughts with God. Like a close friend sharing his problems and aspirations, so is David with God in his prayer.

Lesson no. 9: God will never forsake us

God’s love is unending and unconditional. It is such a wonderful assurance for us that no matter what happens, God will never forsake us nor leave us.

We read in verses 9-10:

Do not leave me nor forsake me,
O God of my salvation.
When my father and my mother forsake me,
Then the Lord will take care of me.

Even if our parents, the closest people in our life, would leave us, God would still take care of us. He will find a way that you and I will be sustained, nourished, and well taken care of.

God’s love is greater than the love of our parents. While there’s no indication that David was abandoned by his parents, if it ever happens, David knew that he can still survive as long as God is with him.

When everyone has turned their back on you, know that God is still there for you. [Click to tweet!]

You can have the confidence that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).

Lesson no. 10: Learn to trust in God

Because of human nature, even though we already knew how God can protect us, you and I at times could still doubt God’s ability. Because of our frailty, we sometimes get too short-sighted and limit God.

However, at the end of Psalm 27, King David gave us an encouraging message:

Wait on the LORD;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord! (verse 14)

Trusting God includes being patient. Sometimes, God quickly delivers us from our affliction, but there are times as well that God would also want us to learn vital lessons first before He would save us.

Like what I always say, “God puts more importance on the development of our godly character than our comfort.”

Moreover, trusting God involves being courageous. It is not easy to trust God when everything seems to be crashing down on you. That’s why we are being told to be brave.

The Hebrew word for courage in verse 14 means to be strong. It means not to be dismayed nor faint. It means that no matter what happens, you would still put your trust and hope in God.

When we do that, it will be God who will strengthen us. God will enable us to overcome trials, adversities, and our enemies. He will provide strength for us to perform our duties and ultimately finish our Christian race!
