I was confused.

If you could only see me on that day, you could see an expression of incredulity written all over my face.

I looked around me and I was so sure I’m in the right direction. However, something tells me I’m heading to the wrong path.

You, see, I’m a person who is not so good with directions. I know, guys are supposed to be map experts. However, I’m not sure why this isn’t the case for me.

I was on my way to the Feast of Tabernacles. When I was about to make a turn, there’s a feeling of doubt within me that I’m heading in the wrong direction.

A few minutes later and a few kilometers treaded, I pulled up to the side of the road. I opened my blue sling bag and reach out to my smartphone. I opened Google Maps and checked my location.

Lo and behold, I’m going to the opposite direction!

Now, this isn’t the first time it happened to me. Even when I’m walking in shopping malls, I sometimes enter the wrong store. And don’t let me tell you the story when I walked in the wrong classroom when I was a freshman in college! It was a funny, but embarrassing experience.

Do you know that God has a GPS prepared for you? Here’s what you need to know!

Learning valuable lessons

Anyway, back to my story, I managed to arrive at the Feast site. I was greeted by my wife’s bewildered look. She asked me about what took me so long. I’m the type of person who turns my mistakes into funny stories and so we just laughed about it.

However, my mistake got me thinking. What if I didn’t have my smartphone with me? What if I can’t find anyone whom I can ask for directions? What if I was lost forever?

Indeed, God be thanked for modern technologies. If you don’t know it yet, Google Maps is a fantastic mobile app that gives you directions and helps you get from point A to B, C, and so on. Google Maps works this way because of the GPS technology, short for Global Positioning System.

My experience led me to learn one important lesson that day. Aside from not to be too proud to ask for directions, I also saw the spiritual analogy between God’s word and the GPS.

Here’s the thing: God’s word is our spiritual GPS.

If you want to stay on track, move in the right direction, and avoid making wrong turns in life, then you better use God’s GPS.

The word of God is your spiritual GPS

The Bible is our “user’s manual.” It is among the greatest gifts of God to man. It shows us how to have a fulfilling life and prepare for our God-given purpose.

If you…

  • have lost your way
  • don’t know the purpose of your life
  • want to know how to make the right decisions
  • properly determine what is right or wrong
  • understand God’s plan of salvation

Then you better use the GPS, which is known as the Word of God. The Bible tells us:

Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path (Psalm 119:105).

In short, God’s word gives light to our path. It makes our path safer by banishing darkness and ensuring that we see where we are going. God’s word prevents us from stumbling down, wandering off the paths of righteousness, and falling down in a pit.

Your GPS versus God’s GPS

Now, here’s the problem: we have our own GPS deeply ingrained in our being. It is called human nature.

The GPS of God will only tell you where to go, but it will NEVER force you to follow it. It only gives you direction. Sometimes, we follow our own GPS. We give in to our human nature and this has led us astray.

The Prophet Isaiah was right when he said:

All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way (Isaiah 53:6).

When we fail to heed God’s GPS and follow our own GPS instead, we end up lost. We arrive in places we did not intend to be. Worst of all, we didn’t arrive at the correct destination for our life!

In the process, our journey could be filled with sadness, pain, and mistakes just because we didn’t follow the direction of God.

So, instead of relying on our GPS, why not use God’s GPS? Unlike our human nature and the physical GPS, God’s GPS is PERFECT. It never gives wrong directions. It is always on point.

Final words to remember

Let me leave you with this beautiful Psalm written by King David. It is about the magnificent attributes of God’s word – His GPS given to man:

The law of the Lord is perfectconverting the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
Yea, than much fine gold
;
SWEETER also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them Your servant is warned,
AND IN KEEPING THEM THERE IS GREAT REWARD (Psalm 19:7-19).

So, are you lost? Do you want to find the right direction? Most importantly, do you want to know your God-given purpose? If yes, then use God’s GPS!

  1. Reminds me of a beautiful hymn by John Henry Newman

    1 Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom,
    lead thou me on;
    the night is dark, and I am far from home;
    lead thou me on.
    Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
    the distant scene; one step enough for me.

    2 I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou
    shouldst lead me on;
    I loved to choose and see my path; but now
    lead thou me on.
    I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
    pride ruled my will: remember not past years.

    3 So long thy power hath blest me, sure it still
    will lead me on,
    o’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
    the night is gone,
    and with the morn those angel faces smile,
    which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
