Taking advantage of the power of prayer

Prayer is powerful. There’s no doubt about that. But how many of us are taking advantage of his great and amazing spiritual tool?

So many of us just go on with our lives without realizing the great advantage that we have as followers of Christ. We know that prayer is important, but how much in your life is spent in prayer?

Maybe, you have thought that a short and simple prayer is enough. You know the routine. You pray a prayer that you have been praying all your life that you have memorized it already and it has become more of a ritual than an intimate conversation with God.

I’m not talking saying superficial, memorized, and scripted prayers. I’m referring to the type of prayer that is heartfelt, genuine, and sincere.

Starting your day with God

When it comes to prayer, it is not about the quantity, but the quality.

God is looking for something deeper, something that isn’t just a routine, but an intentional and conscious conversation with Him.

The Bible shows us the importance of praying in the morning. We read how David wakes up earlier than the morning sun:

I cry out with my whole heart;
Hear me, O Lord!
I will keep Your statutes.
I cry out to You;
Save me, and I will keep Your testimonies.
I rise before the dawning of the morning,
And cry for help;
I hope in Your word (Psalms 119:147).

Yahshua, our Master and Savior, also woke up in the morning to pray to our Father. We read Mark 1:35:

Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.

Jesus Christ and David, and I’m confident that all other true servants of God, fill their thoughts in the earliest part of their day with the thoughts of God.

Before they engage with the cares of this world, they made sure that they have already communed with God and devoted the first moments of their life to Him.

Here’s a vital lesson we need to learn:

Begin your day with God.

If we do this, it shows what truly matters to us. It shows our priorities because the first thing that you do in the morning is the same thing you believe that is important to you.

If the first thing you do in the morning is checking Facebook, then Facebook is more important for you.

If the first thing you do in the morning is to exercise, then fitness is more important for you.

If you work first thing in the morning, then work is more important for you than talking to God.

Now, here’s something that will change your life dear friends. Make this your number 1 rule. I want you to take note of this and write this down. I want you to practice this rule every single day of your life.

Here’s the rule:

Never let your feet touch the floor of your bed, without praying to God.

This means that you should never meet another person without meeting God first.

Now, if you apply this in your life, friends, you will dramatically feel the difference in your day.

How prayer can change your life

The beauty about prayer is that it changes you. There’s something in prayer that actually changes the way we think, the way we talk, and the way we behave.

I can personally attest to the life-changing power of prayer. I’m sure you can too. Think about the day when you forgot to pray in the morning. Notice how your day can easily turn from good to bad.

Compare that to the day when you prayed to God. The difference is incredible!

Having prayed in the morning sets the direction of your day. It changes your mood, from negativity to positivity.

When you finally cast all your cares upon God, you feel lighter. You feel better. It is easier to smile and greet people. You take a different perspective on life that whatever happens during the day, you can always come to God and pray.

In the morning, express your thankfulness to God. Say thank you for the good night rest. Thank you that I am able to open my eyes. I can breathe, stand, sing, and dance. Thank you for grace, for mercy, kindness, and wisdom. Thank you for my parents, my wife, my friends, and my brethren. Thank you for the peace, love, and joy in my life.

There are numerous things to be thankful for. And when we have this attitude of thankfulness in your prayer, you become to be more grateful. You become more appreciative.

You start to appreciate the things that you have instead of complaining and murmuring about the things that you don’t have.

Now, that’s just one example of how prayer can radically change us.

After praising God and thanking Him, say to God, I need your help today, Father. I recognize that I am nothing without you. Let me submit to your perfect will. May all the things that would happen today would be according to your perfect plan, a plan that is greater than all my dreams and ambition.

Father, lead me and guide me. Keep me on the right path. Show me the path that I should take. May you guide me in everything that I do. Help me to know how to interact with other people. May your Holy Spirit inspire me to think, to talk, and to act like you and to respond to every situation in a godly manner.

I pray for my wife. I pray for my kids. I pray for my co-workers. I pray for my boss. I pray for my friends. And I pray for my enemies.

Those types of prayers are the type of prayers that God wants to hear from us. He doesn’t like a half-asleep, memorized prayer. He wants us to be specific. Because when we do that, we foster a closer and more intimate relationship with Him.

  1. Great job with this post. When I didn’t know how to pray, my spiritual mentor gave me a book called “The Hour That Changes The World”. It really changed my relationship with the Lord and helped me understand how prayer is a non-negotiable communion with God. If I didn’t have that intimate quiet time with Him, I know my life would be very different.
