5 Compelling Reasons You Shouldn’t Worship Angels

There is a growing number of Christians today who are worshiping angels. Not known to many, but angel worship has been around as early as the first century. Before you kneel before an angel, you better read these 5 compelling reasons you should NOT worship them!

A poll conducted in 2011 reveals that 8 out of 10 Americans believe in angels. No wonder we see a lot of “angels” in movies, cards, video games, commercials, billboards, and books, among others.

While the Bible does confirm the existence of angels, many people are so impressed with them that they begin to worship these celestial beings. I have even seen a book about how to communicate with angels and ask a favor from them.

Because of the majestic, mysterious, and powerful imagery of angels, coupled with the popular but unbiblical concepts, many people are driven to worship them.

Now, before you bend your knees and bow down to an angel, I’d like to share with you five compelling reasons why you should NEVER worship angels.

5 Compelling Reasons You Shouldn_t Worship Angels

Should we worship angels?

***Before we proceed, just want to share our featured article for the day, “25 Shocking Biblical Facts about Angels You Probably Don’t Know“***

No. 1: Worshiping angels violates God’s commandment

Worshiping angels specifically goes against the first commandment of God. We read in Genesis 20:3:

“You shall have no other gods before Me.”

What most people didn’t know is that angel worship was specifically mentioned by the Apostle Paul, not as a good thing, but absolutely something that we must avoid.

We read:

“Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind” (Colossians 2:18).

So, as we can see, angel worship isn’t a new thing or isn’t part of any new age religion. It has been around as early as the first century.

Just a few decades after Christ died, false teachers have crept in the Church. These deceivers taught that angels can help people gain more blessings and even attain a certain level of divinity.

No. 2: Yahshua or Jesus Christ is our only Mediator with God

Yahshua, our Messiah, is the Mediator between us and God. However, the problem with worshiping angels is that it forces people to believe that they have to go through angels first before they can go to God.

I Timothy 2:5 clearly tells us:

“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”

The problem with angel worship is that people think that if they get the favor of angels, they can also gain the favor of God. This is no different from what most Christians do. They thought they have to pray to saints or go to a priest as well just to get their message to God. (Be sure to read, “The Shocking Reason We Should Stop Praying to Saints.”)

We don’t need any dead saint, priest, or angel to pray to God. We have Christ as our High Priest and Mediator.

We read:

Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:14-16).

With this in mind, let’s go straight to God through our High Priest, Yahshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ).

No. 3: Worshiping angels would make us focus more on them rather than God

Angels are created beings.

We must only worship the Creator and not the creation. While it is true that God uses angels to protect us and do His will, we must be careful not to give credit to them. All miracles and answered prayers are the works of God and not angels.

Throughout the Bible, we see how angels behave. Nowhere in the Bible we can read an angel trying to start a relationship with humans. They only appear to man with God’s permission.

Once they have delivered their message or fulfilled their God-given mission, they immediately leave. They don’t linger around and stay longer than what God intends them to be.

Remember, the Bible suggests that we don’t have a personal guardian angel assigned to each of us. Rather, different angels may work with the same person over time. We might even have more than one angel looking over us at any given point in time.

God does it this way so that we don’t develop a closer relationship with angels. True angels of God are careful not to divert our focus to them, but rather to God.

If you meet a person claiming to be in communication with angels, run away from that person. You know that they are not dealing with angels, but demons!

When we worship angels, we forget the fact that they are simply ministering agents and messengers from God. We rely on angels rather than God and that’s exactly what will happen when you worship angels.

No. 4: Angels who accept worship are demons

Here’s the surest way for you to distinguish a true angel of God and a demon: An angel of God doesn’t accept worship while a demon accepts worship.

We read in Revelation 22:8-9:

“And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things. Then said he to me, See you do it not: for I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.”

This is completely different from what demons do. They pretend to be angels of light. They stay too long, talk to humans, until they get the trust of a person. They then wait for an opportunity to destroy us.

Demons are like their leader, Satan. They love the praise and worship of men. They want to be like God. Satan and his self-centered demons have an insatiable hunger for attention. They would do anything only to be worshipped.

So the next time you encounter someone or an angel that asked you to bow down before them and worship, then you can be CERTAIN that this angel is a demon and you should avoid them at all cost!

No. 5: Only God deserves our praise

If there’s only one being that deserves our praise, that would be God. He is the Giver of life. He sustains us. He provides all that we need.

In Revelation 4, we read about the 24 elders in heaven. They are also angelic beings who have a special role in God’s kingdom. We see how they worship God forever and ever and cast their crown before His Throne.

Notice what they proclaim in verse 11:

You are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power
;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created.”

They too recognize that it is only God who is worthy of praise and should be worshipped.

In I Chronicles 16:23-30, we read the awesome and powerful attributes of God and how we should be moved to worship Him. I believe these fascinating verses deserve our full attention. Let’s read:

Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.

For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised;
He is also to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and gladness are in His place.

Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
Give to the Lord glory and strength.
Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come before Him.
Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth.
The world also is firmly established,
It shall not be moved.

There’s no doubt: if you want to worship anyone, it should be God – not the angels, dead saints, demons, Satan, or any living creature on earth.

Will you still worship angels?

Angels are ministering agents. They are servants of God and they are under His command. We must worship only God who is above all things and the Creator of all things.

Worshiping angels is dangerous. It does not only blind you to the true Source of all good things but also denies you the opportunity to develop a closer relationship with God.

So, worship God. Focus on Him and never let anyone go between you and God. Only by then, we will experience a closer and more intimate relationship with our Creator.

  1. Thanks for this awesome eye opening article. The Lord increase His grace upon you. I was almost falling for it.

  2. First of all, what proof do you have of “demons?” Demons are dead people. When Christians discuss “demons,” they are referring to necromancy. An abomination to God. Satan will never “lead” or is a “leader” of a “demon.” Once in hell, Satan will be tormented by “minions,” as everyone that goes down to the bottomless pit. Satan will not rule hell. There is no power in hell. Minions or “demons” won’t be released from th bottomless pit, until Revelation 9.
