5 Vital Steps on How to Give an Effective Christian Testimony
Here are 5 vital steps on how to give effective Christian testimonies.

Part of our Christian calling is to set a good example to others and give a testimony of our faith. However, Christianity isn’t all about theory. It is about the application of God’s word. If we are to give a good Christian testimony, we need to know how to give one.

So, you may ask, “How can I give an effective Christian testimony?” “Are there things I need to remember before doing so?” “Most importantly, how can my testimony bring glory to God?”

These are some of the questions this blog seeks to answer. If you want to give an effective Christian testimony, then this blog is for you.

Here are 5 steps on how to give an effective Christian testimony.

(But before we proceed, just want to mention my friend’s website on this blog. His website is biggerFAITH.org, a place where you can share Christian testimonies and know more about the theology degree. Check out his website today!)

Step no. 1: Accept God in your life

You can’t give a Christian testimony if you haven’t accepted God in your life. What I mean by this is that the first thing you need to do is recognize your complete dependence on God and how life is pointless without Him.

We read in Romans 10:9:

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Colossians 2:6-7 further states:

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding [d]in it with thanksgiving.”

Living a life apart from God may seem attractive to some. Having no moral rules to follow or a higher authority to submit to, it seems a life of freedom most people dream of.

However, a life without laws and rules is chaos. It may seem to be a good idea to follow whatever your heart desires, this will only lead to ultimate destruction.

Step no. 2: Live a life pleasing to God

Accepting God in your life isn’t enough. Believing in Him is only the first step. Faith alone won’t save you. It should be a living faith that translates into your daily life.

This is clearly explained by James or Yacob:

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?

But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also (James 2:14, 18-20, 26).

Believing in God means that you follow His commandments, fulfill His purpose in your life, and do His will for you. When you do this, you will be able to give a more effective Christian testimony as you see how God changes your life day by day.

Step no. 3: Improve your credibility

No matter how inspiring your testimony may sound like, it would still be not enough if people can’t see the positive change in your life.

You can’t tell people how God changed your life when you yourself don’t produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit. You won’t become a good witness to other people if you continue living in sin. If people could see that you are still the same person – the person who have lots of vices, who cusses, visits illicit nightclubs, and possess other ungodly habits – then you won’t be able to convince anyone through your examples.

Proverbs 22:1 tells us:

A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, Favor is better than silver and gold.

Proverbs 10:9 states:

Whoever walks in INTEGRITY walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.

It was once said, “I rather see a sermon, than to hear one.” In the same manner, people would like to see a Christian testimony rather than hear one.

Credibility isn’t built overnight. It isn’t created by one big act, but rather it is built upon small but consistent acts of love. Your life should be about doing God’s work to the point that it defines you in the eyes of others.

Step no. 4: choose your audience

You need to be wise when it comes to whom you are sharing your testimony with. In most cases, it is easy to share your testimony with like-minded people. However, sometimes, you are forced to share your testimony in a hostile environment.

The Bible tells us:

“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.”

If you give your “pearl” or testimony to the dogs or swine, they won’t see its value. They think of it as foolish and rubbish. Arguing with this type of people is useless. It is better to use your energy to those people who would yield more fruit.

Of course, I’m not saying that you should stop reaching out to these aggressive people. Proverbs 26:4-5 tells us:

Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest you also be like him.
Answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest he be wise in his own eyes.

These verses in the Book of Proverbs tell us that there’s the right time to give an answer to unconverted people and there are times when silence is the best treatment.

In most cases, you don’t need to speak a word, but let your living example serve as a testimony to them who are living in darkness.

Who knows, when they see our light, they might get attracted to it and God will use our example to draw more people to Him.

Step no. 5: Give your Christian testimony

The Bible tells us:

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (I Peter 3:15).

We are commanded by God to give an answer to those who want to know more about our faith. It is our solemn duty to be able to give our testimony to anyone who might need it.

Here’s something we all need to realize: you don’t need to sit down and write your testimony. Of course, that’s something helpful especially if you know you will be sharing your Christian testimony to others ahead of time.

However, in most cases, you will need to share your testimony in the time you least expected. When this happens, you don’t have time to write what to say. Thankfully, you can always surrender the situation to God and let His Holy Spirit move you.

The Holy Spirit inspires and supplies the words that the hearts can’t express.

My point here is that if you have been living a life close to God, your testimony will come out naturally. You don’t have to rehearse or practice how to give it. When you are moved by the Holy Spirit, your testimony will not just be given through your words, but also through your actions.

About 2,000 years ago, Yahshua or Jesus Christ said this about giving testimony:

“Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say” (Luke 12:11-12).

Here are some points you should remember when giving your testimony:

  • Focus on God rather than yourself.
  • Think about how God has changed your life.
  • Your main motivation in giving a Christian testimony is to bring glory to God and not yourself.
  • Be honest. People can easily see through insincerity.
  • Make eye contact. It makes you more genuinely in what you say.
  • Smile when necessary. Speak like you are just talking to a friend.
  • Pray to God for inspiration, guidance, and wisdom.

Give your Christian testimony today

Remember that you give a Christian testimony to help others see the things that only happen when we surrender our lives to God.

You are doing this for other people and not simply for yourself.

We want to show to the world that the best way to live this life is according to God’s will and purpose.

A good friend of mine started his own website. The name is BiggerFAITH.org. He has this page that allows you to share your testimony. It’s a good place to start sharing how God changed your life. The website is relatively new, but it has the potential to make a difference in people’s lives with our help.

Aside from sharing testimonies, BiggerFAITH.org also helps people know more what a theology degree can do for them and how it can be used to further God’s work. Be sure to check the website!

Going back to our main topic, how important is it to be set a good example to others and effectively share our testimony? We read:

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14, 16).

Through our good example, may we point more people to God and bring glory to His name.

Let your light shine to the world.

Give your testimony.

Set a good example.

Most importantly, pray to God that he will use your effort to advance His work.
