10 Reasons Why I don’t celebrate Christmas

Don’t let the sparkling trappings and joyful atmosphere of Christmas deceive you. Rather, let the Bible show you how to truly worship the Living God and His Son, Jesus Christ!

I'm a Christian and I don't celebrate Christmas

People who personally know about my Christian faith is almost always shocked when they learn I don’t celebrate Christmas. I mean, it is supposed to be the birth of our Redeemer and Master, Jesus Christ (Yahshua the Messiah). Surely, if there are people who will celebrate Christmas, that should be Christians and that includes me.

But do you know there are Christians who don’t celebrate Christmas, not because they don’t believe in Christ, but they decided to worship the Eternal God and Jesus according to what the Bible says?

While there are different reasons I don’t celebrate Christmas, I just want to share ten of them here.

How not to Keep Christmas
How not to Keep Christmas

1. Jesus wasn’t born on December 25

Bible scholars and experts would readily admit that December 25 isn’t the birthdate of Christ. As a matter of fact, Jesus isn’t born anywhere near this date!

We all know that shepherds are out on the field when Christ was born. If Jesus was born in the dead of winter, the shepherds would surely put their livestock in danger, exposing their herd of sheep in extreme cold.

Not only that, but we read that Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem because of a Roman census. The Roman government would have known better than ordering a census during bad weather and road condition is self-defeating.

2. Christmas celebrates the birth of the sun god

Do you know that Christmas has always been celebrated for more than 3,000 years before the human birth of Christ? Shocking but it’s true. The earliest roots of Christmas can be traced as far as 200 B.C. In an article I wrote entitled “Who was really born on December 25?” you will read:

The pagan history of Christmas started with the Greeks celebrating a festival in honor of Bacchus. After that, the Romans also have their own festival held in honor of Saturnalia. Both festivals are known for their revelry, nocturnal orgies, chaos, riot, and even death.

Centuries later, the Roman emperor Aurelian inaugurated a festival in honor of the sun god on December 25. It was known as the Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, which means “the birthday of the Unconquered Sun”.

3. Christmas is offensive to Jesus Christ

Imagine, every year, you give a gift to your husband or wife. Only it wasn’t his/her birthday but the birthday of your ex-lover. What’s worse, the gift you gave is the same thing that your ex-lover gave in the past. Surely, it would be natural for your spouse to doubt the genuineness of your love.

Now, think about what Jesus Christ would feel when you celebrate His birthday on the same day that the pagans celebrate the birth of their gods? What’s worse, you celebrate Christ’s birth by using the same pagan traditions you use to celebrate the birth of the pagan gods!

Let’s be honest here for a second. Christmas is something that’s highly insulting to God and to His Son, Jesus Christ.

10 Best Books that Prove Christianity is True (leaderboard)

4. Jesus won’t celebrate Christmas

Nowhere in the Bible do we see Jesus commanding His disciples and followers to celebrate His birth. We don’t even read evidence that the early New Testament Church do so. In fact, we see clear indications that Jesus, the Disciples, and the true Church observed God-ordained Holy Days found in Leviticus 23.

Now, if you are really a follower of Christ, wouldn’t you also celebrate what God commanded us to observe? If we are to celebrate a festival, wouldn’t it be logical to follow what we read in the Bible and not borrow a paganistic way of worship?

5. God seeks the true form of worship

I understand that some people are sincere in keeping Christmas. They solemnly believe in their heart of hearts that they are actually worshiping God.

I don’t condemn nor blame them. In a world ruled and deceived by Satan, it is just not their time yet to know the truth.

However, when you finally come to the truth and discovered what the Bible truly says, you come to realize that worshiping God is not a matter of our will, but God’s will.

We need to ask God how He wants us to worship Him. Is He happy when we recycle pagan practices and traditions and sanitize them with Christian trappings?

Is God pleased when we say we believe in Him and yet, turn a blind eye when He decisively commands us to avoid pagan worship? Are we really honoring God when we worship Him according to what seems right to our own eyes?

John 4:23-24 clearly defines what true worship is:

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and TRUTH; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

God wants us to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Are we truly worshiping God in SPIRIT when we are so focused on the material things we receive? Are we truly worshiping God in truth when we know that Christmas isn’t really the birth of Christ and that Jesus did not command us to worship Him by keeping a pagan holiday?

These are hard questions we need to answer with all honesty.

10 reasons why I don't celebrate Christmas

6. Santa has become the face of Christmas

If you think of Christmas, most people would probably think of Santa more than Jesus Christ. It is not difficult to see why because Santa has been the face of Christmas commercialism.

Most business people would rather promote Santa, a man who encourages buying, so they could earn more sales.

However, do you know the real identity of Santa Claus? Do you know the being behind his jolly, bearded smile?

You are up for the shock of your life. If you want to know who Santa Claus really is, including his dark history, please open this link to a new tab and read the truth yourself.

7. Christmas is driven by commercialism

It is no secret for many of us that business establishments get the most out of their sales during the Christmas season. Thus, it is not difficult to see why Christmas’ popularity is driven by commercialism.

The problem with commercialism is it encourages the way of getting rather than the way of giving.

Yes, a lot of people give gifts during this holiday season but more people get this feeling of entitlement. They feel that since it’s Christmas, they should receive gifts. Not only that, but a lot of people give something expecting that they would also get something in return!

Thus, we have “exchanging gifts” during Christmas. The thing is it is not even your birthday!

8. A lot of lies are propagated during Christmas

Christmas tells us that Christ was born in the dead of winter. Now, that’s a huge lie!

Here are other Christmas lies you should know about:

  • Three kings – the bible didn’t specify how many kings there were. They aren’t even kings but wise men from the east.
  • Nativity scene – the nativity scene shows a baby Jesus in the manger with the animals. Actually, the animals are out in the field. When the wise men arrived, Jesus is already in a house not in a manger. Plus, Jesus is no longer a baby, but rather a young child.
  • Bring Christ back to Christmas – you can’t bring Christ into something that He wasn’t part of in the first place. Christmas is a pagan custom recycled as a Christian holiday.
  • You worship God when you observe Christmas – actually not. If you want to worship God, you need to do it according to His will and purpose. We can’t believe in God and do other things contrary to His commands.

Now, these are just some of the many lies and errors propagated during Christmas. Not to mention the many pagan symbolism and trappings used in this holiday season.

9. Christmas hides the true Festivals of God

While it is true that Christmas is something that could give you that warm feeling, make families gather together, and even make you feel closer to God, it is not the best way for you to achieve this.

After all, it is not about what you feel, but what God feels.

The truth of the matter is that Christmas is a pagan custom used by Satan to obscure God’s true Festivals of God. Most Christians today are oblivious to these God-commanded Feasts found in Leviticus 23.

Jesus didn’t celebrate Christmas but rather God’s Festivals. The Apostles celebrated God’s Festivals as well as the first-century Christians.

Because people are trapped in the illusion that Christmas is the best way for them to worship God, they are blinded by the truth that there are way, way better to be close to God. If you only celebrate God’s Festivals, you will discover why is it better than Christmas and how it can unlock your understanding of God’s great plan of salvation.

10. I would rather follow God’s commands rather than human traditions

It is okay to keep human traditions, but if it goes against God’s commands, then they should be forsaken. Christmas is a human tradition that promotes lies and sadly, obscures God’s truth.

When it comes to choosing between God’s will and human tradition, the answer should be obvious. We must do what God wants us to do rather than what other people want.

Christ, Himself, condemned the Jews of His day when they hold on to their traditions and break God’s command:

“He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:

‘This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men” (Mark 7:6-8).

When we keep Christmas, a pagan holiday that was clearly called an abomination by God, we are breaking the law of our Heavenly Father in the process.

So, between God’s law and human tradition, which would you choose? The popular choice is keeping human tradition, but as for me, I’d rather keep God’s law. Even though it is unpopular and people might ridicule me, I’ll still follow what God says instead of living a comfortable life by going with the flow of mainstream Christianity.

Final Thoughts

As this world celebrates Christmas, remember, what the Bible truly teaches about this worldly holiday. It is the right time that we learn the truth and let the truth transform our lives.

God is not impressed by how many gifts you gave or received during Christmas. He isn’t impressed with how pompous your Christmas decorations are. He isn’t after what feels good for us, but He wants to see whether we will follow His commandments or not.

So, will you still keep Christmas? Some will and some won’t. Some will ignore the truth, while others will act on it. I hope you and I belong to the group of people who will follow God no matter what the consequences may be.

  1. I’m a Christian and I take my faith seriously. .and I will always continue to celebrate Christmas. Many things change/evolve over history. In biblical times, women who wore even a little bit of lipstick or make up were know n to be prostitutes. In our culture now, that’s not the case. I hate to see Christians make a big deal out of nothing and judging other Christians over something like celebrating a traditional holiday. Christmas today (and for a very long time) hasnt been anything close to celebrating rivalry, orgies and death. Christmas is what it is now…the traditions and ceremonies our culture has made it into. And it’s perfectly innocent. It’s about giving, receiving, cherishing family and yes, for Christians, worshipping God.
Celebrating Christmas or any other traditional holiday doesn’t mean we put material things above God or that we don’t acknowledge him the rest of the year. I don’t believe God is the slightest bit offended, because what he’s the most concerned about is the heart and if we are allowing the Holy Spirit to regenerate us from the inside out, not the other way around. I commend you for wanting to stay true to your faith in the best way you know how, but I honestly think this type of judging others about these sorts of things is blinding you to a more mature life in Christ.

    • The bible says broad and wide is the path to hell, and narrow and straight is the path to Heaven…. there will be few that find it. As our brother mentioned God is looking for individuals that will worship him IN SPIRIT and IN TRUTH. Not IN EMOTIONS, not IN LOGIC or REASONING, not IN OPINION, but in spirit and in truth. It is NOT judging if the bible already declares it as true, and if you just decide you don’t want to follow it you will give an account for yourself as well as the rest of us. I love when professed Christians throw around the word JUDGING so they can justify their sins or actions that are NOT pleasing to GOD. You are blind if you CANNOT RECEIVE CORRECTION that is actually written in the bible. God corrects those he love. My sister surrender all to Jesus Christ, because if you are lukewarm he will spit you out. Peace and blessings.

      • I agree, Tatyana. We must worship our Father in spirit and in truth. If it is not the truth, then we are not worshipping in the proper manner. Most importantly, we must always judge ourselves whether we are in the faith or not.

      • You assume that she is Christian because she says so…but the scriptures say “ye shall know them by their fruit”. No Christian, born of the Holy Spirit of the Lord could defend the blasphemy known as Christmas (Christ MASS)….the unholy celebration of the massacre of Jesus.

      • “What right do I have to pronounce judgment on unbelievers? That’s God’s responsibility. But those who are inside the church family are our responsibility to discern and judge. So it’s your duty to remove that wicked one from among you. Yet in no way was I referring to avoiding contact with unbelievers who are immoral, or greedy, or swindlers, or those who worship other gods—for that would mean you’d have to isolate yourself from the world entirely! But now I’m writing to you so that you would exclude from your fellowship anyone who calls himself a fellow believer and practices sexual immorality, or is consumed with greed, or is an idolater, or is verbally abusive or a drunkard or a swindler. Don’t mingle with them or even have a meal with someone like that.”
        ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭5:10-13‬ ‭TPT‬‬

      • Amen. I’m with you Jesus both feet in. Our family are going to start Celebrating the Holy days this year our eyes are opening hallelujah. 💙 bless you sister ❤️

      • Sometime even christian don’t know what they believe in, but if your christian who do not celebrate Christmas I think you don’t know Jesus even though you have your 1million reason why you don’t celebrate Christmas it’s not for God or Jesus it’s only for you. The best reason why christians celebrating Christmas on December it’s not because the Jesus was born on that day it is because Jesus knows that December 25 will be the day that people celebrating peace love and unity that even satan cannot refuse it because he knows how great love there in to this day December 25.. this is the day where whole world celebrating love, peace and joy and this 3 great words are representing Jesus itself. I don’t know to you or what you believe in I just know that December 25 is the day of the Lord Jesus that even evil spirit cannot resist on this day..

      • We need to stop basing our beliefs on what we feel and start basing it on the Bible. You can all the opinions in the world Virgilio, but if it doesn’t square with the Bible, it would be useless. It is like saying, I believe in Jesus Christ but I will not follow what He says in the Bible.

    • You cannot compare celebrating pagan holidays with make up and lipstick. Although this season is a good opportunity to share the gospel, any other day is even better, when people are not full of self worship, shopping themselves to anxiety, most could care less about the gospel message. Christmas is ranked the highest suicide day in the year, and most violence, hate, selfishness, bitterness, etc. occurs during this season. You cant call that God’s holy day. This time is clearly set up by the enemy, satan.

      • Hi Zander,

Thanks for your comment. I didn’t know that a lot of people are depressed and suicidal during this holiday season. Thanks for sharing that.

It is true: God is not the author of confusion and definitely not the author of violence, selfishness, and hate – things we might see in Christmas time. This should make us stop and ponder upon the true origin of Christmas.

      • I love every example you give and the fact that it will enlighten our understanding. Prayers for those with closed eyes may they open in Jesus mighty name 🙏

    • The article is NOT judging others. It is saying WHY the individual does not celebrate chtistmas. The choice is yours.

    • A rose is still a rose, no matter what you call it, and just because it’s a tradition or a custom and is overwhelmingly accepted by the majority does not make it right.

    • Women who publicly wear lipstick and makeup today are still considered prostitutes. The Bible and Truth has not changed, immodesty is just as evil and offensive to God today as it was in the time of the patriarchs, Jesus, and the apostles. Just because our culture says its ok does not mean that God has changed his mind on the topic. God is not an American.

      • Hi Andrea,

Hmm… I won’t go as far as saying that wearing lipstick and makeup would amount to being prostitute. However, if we put more importance to our outward appearance to the point that we are forsaking the weightier matters of the law, then that’s when the problem will arise.

    • I would challenge your statement, “what he’s [God] the most concerned about is the heart.” In Scripture, there a many people who will not enter the Kingdom because they did not hold to the truth of Jesus, and the truth of Jesus is, “If you love Me, obey My commandments” John 14:15. Also note John 3:36 and 1 John 2:4 and 5:2. You will not find anywhere in Scripture that God is more concerned about your and my heart than He is we align our lives to live according to His will.

I would ask you then, if you are truly putting worship of God as a priority in your life, why then don’t you obey the feasts God already established for all His followers found in Leviticus 23? Most Christians will respond by saying, “those things were for the Jewish people.” Or they will say, “Jesus did away with those things on the Cross.” Neither statement can hold up under the scrutiny of Scripture.

I would encourage you to grab your Bible, start at the Genesis 1:1, and read to the back. Write down how many times God’s given instructions are applied to the alien, foreigner, and sojourner. Those are the non-Jewish people. Also note how long these commands are to be observed. Then when you get to Matthew 5:17-19, take a hard look at the words of Jesus. What happens to those who do not follow the commandments and teach others to negate them. This is sobering.

      Blessings

      • Well said. I like that the Holy days are a shadow of what’s to come and I thank God for his grace while I was yet blinded by the god of this world. Thank you God for grace and mercy, thank you for allowing me to see. Matthew 11:25 is what I’m reminded of and Acts 28:28 I believe. Father your will be done your kingdom come. I’m so honored to see what I can I’m ready for the next revelation, astound me MIGHTY GOD 🙌 IN JESUS NAME.

    • Well said Tamara
      Amen 🙏
The bible says also we must be careful of wolves desguised in sheep’s clothing
If they knew why we celebrate Christmas. They will follow celebrate and worship God but they don’t . What An opportunity for all of us Christian to sing songs psalms and hymns to our Lord Jesus Christ worship him endlesssly
It’s not just the 25th of December we celebrate as a matter all Christians knows Christ was not born on the 25th of December
Do you celebrate the death of your lost grand parent that lives during the 1st world war
on the 5th of November or it’s a rememberance day ?
The fact is as Christian we use those event so we can remember Christ Jesus our Lord and saviour not to worship material things
You see God can use bad things (pagan celebrations) and turn into a good things and glorify him … because this Christmas CHRIST IS GLORIFIED !!!

      • Hi Jules!

        Thanks for your comment.

Why would God use an abominable pagan celebration to honor Him and His Son? The Bible is clear that we shouldn’t use pagan practices to worship God.

Moreover, the problem with Christmas is it hides the real Festivals of God — the same festivals that Yahshua (Jesus), the Apostles, and early Christians celebrated. Nowhere in history will you see Yahshua or any of His follower celebrating His birth.

    • Obedience is greater than sacrifice. There a many scriptures that instruct True Followers of Jesus Christ to no longer conform to the ways of this world but to come out from them and be separate. To be a salt to this world and a light shinning into their darkness. True worship is denying the desires of the flesh and surrendering our will to the Lord and taking on His will in our lives. This practice is not popular today in Christianity. So called believers want to hold on to their old ways by trying to “Christianize” the practices instead of releasing the old ways and allowing the full “New Creature in Christ” to form. I just hope that they that choose to do this are not the believers that Jesus declares “Depart from Me into the lake of fire because I do not know you” Jesus said that if you truly love Me you would do my commands.

      • Amen. God said be the salt, Satan wants us to be sugar. Very similar LOOKING but the TASTE is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

God said remember the sabbath day (the seventh day) and keep it holy

Satan says forget that, don’t observe the sabbath on Saturday ! Change it to Sunday, the first day of the week— the day dedicated to the Sun God! No surprise that even this Christmas (pagan) holiday is dedicated to him as well.

    • Biblically speaking Jesus called us to take bread and wine in remembrance of him. If God wanted us to celebrate him or for that matter his birth or resurrection this is as close as we will get. Other than worshipping him in truth and spirit, if it was otherwise you better believe that he would have said so through the holy spirit in his word. We are called also be be set apart from the world, to expose evilness and wickedness and to be honest all I have been witnessing is a lukewarm Church. One that will proclaim to know God and still have one foot in and one foot out, and we all know that God spits these type is people out. I have seen my own brothers in Christ succumb to the worldly mentality and have been brainwash into sugarcoating and accepting mixing roots of paganisms symbols with what the church calls today “Christmas.” I have spoken to many people about this topic and some say that as long as they are not bowing down and worshipping a tree which they decorate because is what “tradition” requires, or that they are not celebrating as pagans ones did because they don’t sacrifice children they just eat spend time with the family give gifts and be thankful. Unfortunately all I hear is an excuse to call something good bad and something bad good. When God said have no grave images, Christmas is the same as well have saints and the virgen Mary statue in your house as long as you don’t give them offerings and bow down to them. Do you see the irony? All I’m saying is if us as the church want to make a day to celebrate God respect and do not offend God by making a man made holiday with decorations full of satanic symbols. Be loyal to God not the tradition of men.

    • I agree with what you say above. Part of this article puts non-Christian people who celebrate ‘Christian’ Christmas into the same box as Christians who know there wern’t 3 kings but understand poetic license! There are Christians who give lavishly because the Lord gave the most lavish gift ever and they try to show some measure of self-sacrificing love. Some give no presents at all. Some spend the season helping others. I don’t know of any Christian who actually thinks Jesus was born on Dec. 25th. It is simply a day we use for that purpose. There are some serious problems with the view that celebrating Christmas is evil. The variety of ways Christmas is celebrated is, of course, varied, and we can address/challenge particular thoughts/practices. Also ….also…. If I feel blessed by God, let’s say…because I can see he has answered prayer, then I can choose to commemorate that event. I can worship him for that. I don’t have to have him directly instruct me to celebrate that happening. I can make a point to remember are celebrate. So, please, let’s use our minds. I agree with Tamara.

  2. Pingback: 10 Biggest Lies Your Pastor Probably Had Told You | Becoming Christians

  3. Praise God, for this post. You hit it right on the head. NO WHERE IN THE BIBLE does GOD approve of Christmas he actually CONDEMNS pagan practices. In Jeremiah 10 he says do NOT go into the woods and cut down trees, decking them with gold or silver they are IDOLS!!!!. My pastor has informed his congregation about Saturnalia, and let me tell you many have been offended due to him revealing this truth. The bible says that Man has made the word of God to NONE EFFECT due to our traditions. It truly is a spiritual battle that many are too blind to see or are willing to be used by satan. How does me getting everything I WANT for Christmas glorify GOD?…. It doesn’t it allows man to selfishly indulge in their desires, and go crazy when they dont get what they want or can brag about what they got. May the Lord Jesus continue to guide you, and use you mightly for his Kindgom. God bless!

    • Jeremiah 10:1-10 explains that pagans and Christians have prayed to Christmas trees to bless their friends and family and to curse their enemies.

Yeah. If a Christian is ruled by hatred and weird thinking they hate the idea of Christmas.

Christmas ended pagan slaughter of babies because it isn’t necessary for pagans to slaughter innocent babies in Europe. Christians should celebrate such an end to wickedness and a call to REMEBER THE BIRTH OF JESUS.

Can a pagan enjoy Christmas with present and Santa? Let them. Christians don’t wish to steal joy from kids.

      • Hi Thomas!

It is not up to us to decide how to worship God. We always need to go back to Him and ask God how He wants to be worshiped. He calls pagan’s way of worship as abominable. Why should we then use Christmas – a recycled pagan tradition – to worship our Father? It is just irrational for us to do so especially when you are using the same pagan worship which God hates.

    • I would love to find out where you go to church! Our family hasn’t had a church family in years because we cannot find one church that doesn’t celebrate pagan holidays.

      • Hi Jacqueline,

I’m from the Philippines and I belong to a small group of believers. We do have Sabbath services every Saturday and broadcast it on Skype. I know it is better to have a group which you can see in person, but if you’re interested, just let me know and I can give you more details.

If you are also keen to knowing a group near you, I can also point you to the right direction. Send me an email, joshuainfantado@gmail.com so I can tell you groups with similar beliefs near your place. 🙂

        Regards,
        Joshua

  4. So I have a few questions. 2 years ago in October, as I was study/meditating/reading scripture and praying, it came to me to investigate Christmas. And I actually saw a post about it on a Christian page on Facebook too.
Based on everything I read, and going back and re-reading some scriptures, I stopped. No more tree, definitely no Santa, no more bright colorful lights. I got rid of all of it, and explained to my family why. My husband (who wasn’t really a believer at the time) was just glad he no longer had to fight with the lights, and happy that we would probably be saving some money. My kids (all adults) just thought it’s mom and her Jesus thing again.
But I still put out my nativity. And I have a snowman collection that I put out, but I think of it as winter, not Christmas. My front porch has evergreen put out. This will be there thru January and February, I think of it as nature brought in, much like I have flowers from my garden everywhere when they’re in season. I will go to one of my children’s homes on “the day” and spend time, bring one modest gift for each grandchild.
I’m definitely going to spend some time praying about it, but after reading this post, and another one concerning Luke 10:62 I’m wondering if “I’m looking back”, or not letting go properly. Admittedly I have concerns regarding how my children will view any further changes I make. When most churches celebrate not only Christmas, Santa comes to church for pictures! My kids think I am going overboard. My husband has been spiritually woken up by God, about a year and a half ago. So he is way more open to what and why I’ve made changes, but doesn’t think we should completely cut it out.
I am going to spend some time with God about this, but I am curious to hear your thoughts.
I really wish I could find a church I felt was really invested in seeking relationship with Him, it seems many do what they do because it’s always been done. My Christian friends think I’m a little out there too.

    • Thanks for your comment, Barbara. The world will hate us for believing the truth written in the Bible. God tells us that if we want to be friends with Him, we must not be a friend of this world’s system.

I know it’s tough to be different, but God has called us out of this world to be holy and be set apart from the rest.

Stand strong and keep on learning. God will bless those who really seek Him and will enlighten their hearts and mind when they do their best in seeking out the truth.

      Cheers,
      Joshua

    • HI Barbara! I came on this site because I was taught not to celebrate Christmas in church. You respond quickly to truth and your heart is good soil! Don’t be discouraged, I believe you will find the church you need to go to. God will guide you there.

    • Hi Barbara! I came on this site because I was taught not to celebrate Christmas in church, and wanted to check out the reasons in this article. You respond quickly to truth and your heart is good soil! Don’t be discouraged, I believe you will find the church you need to go to. God will guide you there.

    • You can find a church that promotes a true relationship with God by searching on the internet for a Sabbath-keeping Church of God. United Church of God is one of those and has congregations across the country. Locations are listed on ucg.org . I hope this helps you in your journey of seeking a true relationship with God.

  5. I understand the “Spirt of Christmas giving, receiving and cherishing family etc.” posted by Tatayna above. But there is nothing Spiritual associated with the sentiments offered by such, as Matthew 5:46 says “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?” Certainly an “earthly” reward a boost in the giver’s and receiver’s ego, a fleeting reward, but no spiritual reward. Surely Jesus would not want his birth to be celebrated, rather He would want his death and resurrection- the triumph over evil to be celebrated over anything else. We Christians did not benefit from His birth, but His sacrifice benefitted us all.
PS: Thank you, Lord for your sacrifice!!!!!

  6. This is the first year our family is not celebrating. It feels strange because I have so many good memories associated with christmas but I know that God requires “obedience” over “sacrifice”. The very word has become offensive since I’ve learned this year that it means “Christ’s mass”. Many Christians don’t know what “mass” means but God in the past few years has lead me to learn what it means: mass is “…the unbloody sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Christ” (http://www.theholymass.com). The Bible is clear that Jesus died once and there is no need for any type of sacrifice for forgiveness of our sins. So “merry chirstmas” is saying “merry Christ’s sacrifice” only satan would be “merry” of this horrible event. The Purtins had it right when they outlawed christmas, unfortunately overtime they caved to cultural pressures. Christmas truly is one of the greatest deception that the devil has devised to trick Christians into worshiping him by appearing as “an angel of light” and mixing lies with truth. My wife and I are still struggle with our hearts and the challenge is more difficult because we have kids. But the following verses have been my anchor:
Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. (Jeremiah 10:2)

What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. (Deut 12:29-32)

Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; (Ex 23:2)

And be not conformed to this world: (Romans 12:2)

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: ( 1 Peter 2:9)

As Joshua has pointed out that we are called to be different (ie peculiar which means “strange, odd & weird”), so the strangeness that we are feeling is a confirmation that we’re doing the right thing.

    Thanks for the truth.

    • Hi Edward!

Wow! I admire your courage to really stand up for the truth. Knowing that it’s your first time, I know it could be tough. However, God is with you and that’s more than enough. God urges us to be a friend of Him and not a friend of this world.

My father also told me the real meaning of Merry Christmas and you’re right. He added that it also means Christ’s dismissal.

I know it’s hard but God calls us to do the right thing and not the easy thing.

Keep the faith and know that God is with you.

      Regards,
      Joshua

  7. What have beginning have an end, The birth of Jesus Christ was the beginning of a glorious thing that took place in the redemption of humanity, though scholar’s admitted that its not December 25 but we as Christians or rather Children of the most high God decided to celebrate him this day, it’s not a sin, note am not attacking you. God approvals of Celebration that brings honour to his name, the fact is we must have a positive disposition to matters because there are things we become dogmatic about, when I celebrate Christmas I don’t honour the devil but Christ Jesus, God is not angry with Christmas celebration, but you have your disposition as well as others, and also how sure are you of the accuracy of the information study
Head analysis can’t help but the Holy Spirit should reveal it to you.
    Thanks kingdom luv

    • Hi Champion,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

It is not up to us how we want to worship God. We can’t tell God we love you and won’t follow His commands.

God, in His Holy Bible, commands us to keep His ordained Feasts (Leviticus 23) and not old recycled pagan holidays.

The question now is, why do we keep on insisting to keep a pagan holiday when God has already told us what to celebrate?

Yes, I understand that most people today keep Christmas because they want to worship God and not the devil. However, the Bible tells us what separates the true worshiper and the false worshiper of God. John 4:24 tells us that the true worship of God are the ones who worship Him in truth and in spirit. You admit that December 25 isn’t the correct date of Christ’s birth which means it is false. Does that make you a true worshiper?

I’m not condemning you or anyone who celebrates Christmas. I know they are sincere in what they do but sometimes, we become sincerely wrong. If we are really sincere, then let’s do it in the right way. Do it according to God’s command.

      Cheers,
      Joshua

      • I don not condemn anybody who will celebrate christmas specially if he is a born again christian, that is his conviction, he is just grateful that one day GOD manifest Himself in the form of flesh because without being born in the flesh there is no death in the flesh also..i believed dec. 25 is not the accurate date whereby Jesus Christ born and its true practice by pagan..but my question is this..how about sunday or worship on sunday which you and i worship every sunday..it was also used by pagan in thier worship…what is the difference all came from pagan practices..The most impt. there; GOD sees the heart of the true worshipers

      • Hi Peter,

I don’t worship on Sunday. I keep the Sabbath day, which is from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. I do agree that Sunday is the pagan’s day of worship and we must go back to the original commandment of God.

I don’t condemn people as well if they observe Christmas. However, it is our duty to proclaim the truth. Whether you believe what the Bible say or not, God will be their judge, not me.

        Cheers,
        Joshua

  8. Where do I learn more about these points, or what sources are available? Can you share where you learned about them? Thank you, I’d like to read more about it.

  9. I see what this article is saying and do believe that Christmas is a pagan holiday. But what I don’t get is people do not want to hear the truth. I think people care more about feeding the flesh then doing what is right before God. In the Bible when the Jews would go into a new land and take it over God told them not to pick up the pagan ways of the people. Did they lesson? No of course they did not they worship other god and for got about God (Jesus Christ). We in The are doing the same thing. What make it hard is dealing with family that want to celebrate Christmas with you. How do you handle people that say you are crazy. People can say all they want that we are judging but we are not. We are trying to Follow the word of God and not be ignored.

  10. I am grateful to find this article! For over 30 years I did not want to lie to my kids about Santa but was ‘out-voted’ by well meaning people. Regardless, I still celebrated Christmas thinking that was the proper thing to do. A few years ago, I finally learned more of the truth and it hurts me that so many people are deceived to think that these worldly activities would be pleasing to our Father. My family doesn’t quite understand but offering this article to them will be a great way to explain. Thank you so much! 🙂

    • Hi Nomers99,

I’m glad that you were able to decide to stop celebrating Christmas. I know for may folks, it is difficult to do so even after learning the truth.

I hope this article would be a good tool to explain some points to your family why we need to stop celebrating it.

      Regards,
      Joshua

  11. Full disclosure, celebrating Christmas is not a requirement (key word) for any Christian. Therefore, choosing to not celebrate it is perfectly fine. But I need to address the plethora of false information here.

    Point 1
We don’t know the date but there are a lot of assumptions of shepherding here that are not true of the region in which Christ was born. First, the rainy season of that area started in late October to early November. This would have increased growth in grazing fields and provided substantially more food for livestock of all kinds. While the weather would be colder it was prime feeding time for these animals. Second, shepherds in that region at that time were not like other shepherds. They did not have “barns” to house these sheep but actually lived with them in the fields where they were currently grazing. Shepherds were also generally “outcasts” of society and many did not have residences in local towns so they really had no other place to reside but in the fields. Average temp in the evenings would have ranged from 40s to mid 50s with an average of 7-10 days of rain. So “extreme cold” as you stated is what we would call “chilly”.

The roads were still regularly travelled throughout the winter so the travel aspect of your point is incorrect as well.

    Point 2
The Greeks did not use a Gregorian (solar) calendar with 365.25 days but used the lunar calendar with 354 days. This means that the Greek’s December 25th would not always align with our December 25th. Therefore, associating any date from a lunar calendar with the solar one is incorrect. Additionally, pagans do not have the corner market on days. Every day is the Lord’s despite those who would use any day for evil purposes.

    Point 3
Based on the false information proposed in your Point 2 (as I pointed out above), this point is irrelevant.

    Point 4
The God-ordained holy days and celebrations of the Old Testament were foreshadows to point to Christ. Did they celebrate them? Yes. Does that alone mean that we cannot celebrate Christ’s birth even though they did not? Of course not. As for celebrating those festivals today…I’d caution against it since they were fulfilled in Christ. Could you “observe” them in using them to teach how Christ fulfilled them? Absolutely, but they have fulfilled meaning now because of Christ.

    Point 5
This is also based on the false information of Point 2 and is, again, irrelevant. I understand wanting to get a full 10 points for an article but this is just recycled from your second point.

    Point 6
Santa becomes the face of Christmas IF you let him. I briefly looked at the link you provided but that is even more false than this article. It reads more like it was written by a conspiracy theorist than someone who actually researches history. The legend of Santa is derived from the life of Bishop (Elder) Nicholas of Myra who lived during the 3rd and 4th century, was believed to have attended the Council of Nicea in 325AD, a known preacher of the Gospel, a compassionate philanthropist giving selflessly of his own money to help others, and whose life served to inspire others to love people with the compassion of Christ. Even the color of Santa’s outfit is derived from the original garments worn by church Bishops/Elders of that time.

    Point 7
I don’t completely disagree with this point but it is only true if you let it be. Even the Lord’s Day can lose focus or meaning if you allow it to.

    Point 8
You make four points in this one point. The first two are correct and we should work to correct them in our celebration. The third is again (you just keep recycling this over and over) a repeating of you Point 2 which has been proven to be factually incorrect.

    Point 9
You’re correct that what feels right or what we like should be of no consideration IF it violates what God commands. But you have again built this point on the false information of Point 2 and assumption of Point 4.

    Point 10
As a summarization point this one falls because the others themselves are faulty or inaccurate. I do commend you for pointing out that any traditions which clearly violate Scripture should be abolished but you have not made the case with the preceding 9 points that this is the situation with Christmas.

I would encourage a little more research in the areas of biblical geography, biblical and world culture, as well as history for future reference. I appreciate the heart behind this article and the desire to glorify God but keep in mind that part of glorifying God is ensuring that the information which we convey is accurate and not based on our own cultural or personal biases.

    • Hi Adam!

Thank you for taking the time to comment. 🙂

      Point 1:

Shepherds were not in the fields during December. According to Celebrations: The Complete Book of American Holidays , Luke’s account “suggests that Jesus may have been born in summer or early fall. Since December is cold and rainy in Judea, it is likely the shepherds would have sought shelter for their flocks at night” (p. 309).

Similarly, The Interpreter’s One-Volume Commentary says this passage argues “against the birth [of Christ] occurring on Dec. 25 since the weather would not have permitted” shepherds watching over their flocks in the fields at night.

I asked someone in Israel if they do have shepherds watching herds at night during this time. His reply:

Hi Joshua Infantado. Here is the response from my friend “It is the rainy season in Israel right now. Cold rains. The grain crops have just now germinated and little green shoots are starting to stick up this past week. The sheep are in barns to keep them from the cold rain. There is no vegetation until before Passover for them to eat. There are no shepherd tending their flocks by night. As you know that was in September on feast of trumpets. I have a number of articles to prove this.” Hope this helps you.

      Point 2:

Hey you made a good point here.

The way I see it, even if they don’t have the same calendar, it is always during the winter solstice that they hold their pagan celebration, which is toward the last weeks of December.

      Point 4:

Let me ask you? How did Christ fulfilled the Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles, and the Last Great Day? These Feasts pictures future events. Moreover, even when Christ returns, we will all be celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles, one of God’s ordained festivals (Zech 14:16). This is a long topic, but would just mention those points.

So, why do we insist of celebrating something that God didn’t command us today while we ignore what He clearly commands in the Bible?

      Point 6: Please read: https://becomingchristians.com/2015/12/10/can-we-really-trust-santa-claus-10-shocking-ways-he-deceives-us/

I’m glad we were able to agree on some points, Adam. 🙂

I understand we both want to please our Creator the best we could. May Yahweh guides us to all truths.

      God bless.

      Joshua

  12. Thanks for this article. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with celebrating Christmas as long as Christ birth is what you are celebrating.

    • This is incorrect James. First, most biblical scholars agree that Jesus was born at the end of September. So, why celebrate it three months later?? Second, God doesn’t like it when we choose our traditions over Him. I encourage every believer to read this book: https://www.amazon.com/SANTA-TIZING-Whats-wrong-Christmas-clean/dp/1607911159. The author spent ten years of her life researching Christmas. You’ll be shocked to learn the history. Jesus told her “Christmas will be the golden calf of America”.

  13. I’d like to bring out some other points that have not been covered. When we celebrate Christmas, we are saying we are celebrating Christ’s birthday. In the Bible there are only two references to the celebration of a person ‘s birth, and both resulted in a death: Pharaoh’s and Herod’s. the first is recorded in Genesis 40:19-22, “19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee. 20 And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand 22 But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.” The second was King Herod’s birthday, where the head of John the Baptist was served up on a platter; Mark 6:22-29, “22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. 23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. 24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. 26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.” Each of these birthday celebrations only non-believers joined the celebration and at each of these birthday parties culminated in at least one person’s death. There is no mention of any Christians celebrating birthdays. The only day Jesus instructed us to memorialize was Jesus’ death. 1 Corinthians 11:24-25, KJV, “24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.” Some other things that one should consider are: 1) Since when do we celebrate the birth of someone who has died? And if we do, do we depict them as babies? 2) When have you celebrated someone’s birthday on a day different than the day on which the person was born, not invite that person, and give presents to everyone but the person celebrating their birthday? 3) And when did you make it more about something, or someone else ie, Santa Claus, besides the person whom you are honoring? And further, look at the horrible things that occur around Christmas time: greed, stealing, suicides, abuses of family members, etc. Do you really think that Jesus approves of this? And do you think that the effort you into decorations, parties, and gifts really impresses Jesus? And in todays world, people of almost every religion, as well as atheists, celebrate Christmas. Remember Jesus said his people are no part of the world. Here are some verses that emphasize this: 1. John 17:14-16 “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” 2. John 15:19 “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” 3. John 8:22-24 “So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” 4. 1 John 4:5 “They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. Satan is the god of this world.” 5. 1 John 5:19 “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.” 6. John 16:11 ” Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.” 7. John 12:31 “The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.” 8. 1 John 4:4 “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 9. Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” 10. James 4:4 “You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” 11. 1 John 2:15-17 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” I rest my case. 😊

  14. Telling my family for the most part that I’m not celebrating holidays anymore with a 6 and 9 year old sons who completely agree with what the bible says hasn’t been too hard. My dad took the first steps and opened my eyes. I told my grandparents today and even walks on egg shells for them and she pretty much said I manipulated my kids, she believes in God but the Bible is a fairy tale (I don’t see how thats possible to believe both of those) I’m tearing the family apart, she doesn’t have to respect my beliefs. Etc. Today was a hard day for me and my kids hearing all of this. They are hurt but more hurt for her that she could believe something like this. My 6 and 9 year old read the Bible and we talk, they give me their opinions and I listen..I couldn’t imagine lying to them like this society wants me to. But still, when people say you should celebrate it may be their last Christmas it’s so hard to resist. But I have to be strong and keep the word of God in my head and heart and this too shall pass. Glad to know there’s many more of us to choose to follow the live that God set for us and leave these traditions behind..

    • I know following God is difficult at times especially when you find yourself standing alone. However, don’t lose your faith. God will eventually work things out for you, Kelsey.

  15. As a Messianic Jewish believer — I only started to pay attention to Christmas due to my new belief in Jesus as my Hewish Messiah. However, I quickly learned that most Christians worshipped the “holiday” with all of its trappings far more than Jesus. BTW — you didn’t mention that the vey name CHRIST-MAS is basically calling it a Catholic mass, something that I certainly don’t support. (In Spanish it’s Navidad — Nativity- which fits far more.) the details about His birth are certainly well covered in Scripture so obviously God wanted us to know about it. But to celebrate Dec 25th. No basis. However — I have no problem joining in celebrating Jesus any day of the year.
