5 Little-Known Reasons Christians Should NOT Celebrate Christmas

It’s that time of the year again when we are bombarded with so many things about Christmas – from Christmas songs that we hear in the grocery store to the innocent Christmas greetings of our neighbor. There’s no doubt; Christmas is among the most anticipated events not just for Christians, but also for the non-religious.

However, behind the joyous celebration and warm feeling brought about by Christmas, there are few Christians who don’t celebrate this traditional holiday. If you really dig deep enough in your Bible, you will find reasons that Christians ought NOT to celebrate Christmas!

I want to invite you to read these five simple, but serious reasons you and I, as Christians, should not celebrate Christmas. I hope you understand these reasons with an open heart and mind. Pray to God as well to give you the willing heart to accept these hard-to-believe truths.

5 Little-Known Reasons Christians Should NOT Celebrate Christmas

Reason no. 1: December 25 is not the birthdate of Christ

NO evidence supports December 25 as the birthdate of Christ. On the contrary, MANY pieces of evidence refute this claim. For example, the Bible tells us that during the night Christ was born, there were shepherds out in the field herding their flock (Luke 2:8). The weather in Bethlehem during December is miserably cold. No shepherd would let his tender and fragile flock of sheep be out on the field in this type of weather.

We also recall that Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem for a Roman census. The Roman government would never order such a census to occur at a time when the roads are in bad condition, and the temperature often drops below freezing point.

Of course, these are just some biblical evidence that shows December 25 is an IMPOSSIBLE date when Christ was born. Any scholar and even pastors who celebrate Christmas would readily admit that December 25 is not the birthdate of Christ.

Reason no. 2: Christmas is a pagan festival

So if December 25 is not the birthdate of Christ, then how was this date chosen? Do a quick research, and you will soon discover that December 25 is associated with pagan festivals, often marking the birth of pagan gods! So instead of celebrating the birth of Christ, the majority of Christians now are celebrating the birth of pagan gods – something that God extremely CONDEMNS!

Most Christmas symbolisms and beliefs have nothing to do with Christ.

Have you ever wondered what the evergreen trees, yule logs, mistletoes, flying reindeer, and an old fat guy in a red jumpsuit have to do with the birth of Christ? The obvious answer is, NOTHING!

How about giving gifts to each other during Christmas? Doesn’t this just drive the engine of commercialism? Instead of the spirit of giving, what actually reigns during this holiday is the spirit of getting!

How not to Keep Christmas
How not to Keep Christmas

Reason no 3: God did not command us to celebrate Christ’s birth

As much as we like to, God did not tell us to celebrate Christ’s birth. At least twice the Bible mentioned people celebrating birthdays, and we saw that both ended in tragedy.

If God or Christ wants us to celebrate Christmas, then we should find direct command from the Bible. However, not a single verse can be found. To make things even worse, the Bible did not reveal the exact date of Christ’s birth!

So are we free to make our own laws or commandments? Do we have the freedom to designate a date of Christ’s birth and worse use a pagan festival? Are we better than God? The obvious answer to these questions is NO. If we are really adamant about following God, then we should not add or subtract from His commandments.

Reason no. 4: God called Christmas an abomination

The Bible clearly tells us that pagan festivals are an abomination to God and these include Christmas. We obviously read:

“When the Lord your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’ YOU SHALL NOT WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD IN THAT WAY; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. Whatever I command you, BE CAREFUL TO OBSERVE IT; you shall not add to it nor take away from it” (Deuteronomy 12:29-32).

Does God approve of Christmas? If you are God, do you want your people to use pagan festivals to honor you? Do you like to be worshiped with recycled garbage or those things that you called abominable, futile, worthless, and unacceptable?

Reason no. 5: Christmas hides the actual Festivals of God

If we are not to celebrate Christmas, then what should we celebrate? The Bible clearly tells us that we must celebrate the Festivals of God enumerated in Leviticus 23. The servants of God and the New Testament Church celebrated them. Even Christ and the Apostles.

You won’t find them celebrating Christ’s birth or Christmas. They celebrate the Festivals of God – festivals that show us God’s plan of salvation! If the Apostles and the first-century church members were alive today, they would be shocked to see “Christians” celebrating Christmas!

So it’s your choice; will you celebrate a recycled, abominable, and cursed pagan holiday? Or will you celebrate God’s ordained and appointed Feasts? The answer should be obvious, but it’s hard to follow. But God will reward you richly with divine blessings when you really seek His will and do His commandments.

  1. Jesus was actually born in october. It says so in the bible. Im a jehovah witness so I can’t celebrate any holidays.

  2. Ok let me break it down for you people celebrate christmas to spend time with family it is not a festival. should we change the days of the week too????? all the days of the week are pegan. also do you eat meat?? better stop doing that because you are contributing to killing an animal thou stalt not kill end of story. please stop preaching stupidity thanks.

    • Hey Joe!

      Thanks for your comment.

People can spend time with their love ones in any time they want.

For the name of the week, yes, they do have pagan names. However, we don’t use these pagan names to worship God.

Yes, I do eat meat. The commandment “Thou shalt not kill” applies to human beings not to animals.

      I hope that helps.

      Regards,
      Joshua

  3. That is what I believe. I heard it mentioned last night in an online service about Chanukah that Yeshua may have been conceived around Chanukah, which then would make his birth some time in Sept.

  4. It’s interesting that the same people that condemn celebrating Christmas, worship on Sunday, the pagan day of Sun Worship. Many of them dress up on Halloween, hunt colored eggs on Easter, and give away hearts on Valentines day, tooth fairy, and so on. The same people celebrate the festivals of the gods which were pointing to the coming of Christ, see Colossians 2:17-17. Continuing to celebrating them is an indication that Christ hasn’t come yet.
You should celebrate Christ’s birth everyday, and as long as you know the truth about Christmas, you should be free to highlight it as a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and savior.

    • Hi Charles!

For one thing, I don’t worship on Sunday. I keep God’s Sabbath. I also don’t celebrate halloween, easter, valentine’s and other pagan festivals.

I’m afraid you have a wrong understanding of Colossians 2:16-17. On the contrary, the Paul was saying that the Christians in Colossians are keeping the Sabbaths and God-ordained festivals.

Yes, we can surely be thankful for the human birth of our Messiah, but it shouldn’t be our focus to the point that we celebrate it with paganism.

  5. Good article. Learn not the ways of the heathen. When studying this years ago, a convicting aspect of this season’s “spirit” was that all of my unsaved neighbors and family loved to partake in it. I realized that it has not only no Biblical grounds, but pagan history and that the Catholic church set the date, and separated. God bless you.

  6. I have observed xmas for years before I became curious about its origin as an adult seeking truth. I was born on December 25th. As a child xmas was shown to me be believed that Jesus was born on December 25th. I really didn’t understand it all – Santa wouldn’t give you gifts if you were naughty. I had to be good for Santa. I couldn’t understand how an overweight man would enter a house through a chimney? I’ve heard all the usual comments most of my life about xmas. “Your a Jesus baby!”

Why do I call it xmas? Should I attach Christ to a pagan festival? People call it a holiday. Why attach Holy to it? Every year I get the usual xmas greetings from my family and friends and they throw in the happy birthday, too. When I did my search for its origin and discovered the truth I became angry in the beginning but then relieved about December 25th. It has no truth regarding Jesus Christ.

When I watch the madness of people rushing to stores in heavy traffic to buy gifts, or some people fighting for purchases in stores, or believing they have to do all these things because it’s the spirit of xmas. Afterwards the madness to return or exchange gifts to stores? The cycle starts over again.

Much of the xmas tradition didn’t make sense to me as a child growing up to adulthood. I would ask myself, “Why would God want us to do these things?”

    • This is a good reflection Ruben. It is really difficult to make a case for Christmas because it never worship God in the first place. As expected from a pagan festival, it becomes full of lies and deception when people attempted to turn it into a Christian celebration.

      • May God bless you helping other believers learn the truth about xmas. The truth sets us free!

May God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ bless you and continue His works in you, Joshua.
