What Does God Think About Halloween?

Before you celebrate Halloween this year, you better know its dark history, pagan origin, and its negative influence. In this post, let us consider what God thinks about Halloween!

Every year, millions of people celebrate Halloween. It is the time of the year when kids go trick-or-treating, horror movies dominate cinemas, scary stories are told around camp-fire, and adults dress up as zombies, vampires, demons, and other gruesome beings.

Halloween seems to be fun and exciting for most people.

However, to celebrate or not to celebrate Halloween has been a controversial topic for Christians. Some argue that it is just a harmless entertainment and we can “Christianize” and use it for God’s glory. On the other hand, some explain that Christians should not participate in Halloween as it glorifies evil.

While we all have our own opinions, what really matters most is what God thinks about Halloween. After all, if we are truly Christians, we need to listen to what God says and not what we believe about how we should worship Him.

What Does God Think About Halloween?

The Dark History of Halloween

Most historians and secular scholars would agree that Halloween originated from an ancient pagan celebration known as Samhain. According to The Encyclopedia of Religion, Samhain is “a celebration marking the beginning of winter as well as the first day of the New Year within the ancient Celtic culture of the British Isles.”

The eve of Samhain is thought to be a time when the world of humans and the supernatural collide with each other. It is believed that the souls of the dead can visit their relatives and other earthly inhabitants. In turn, Samhain is also a time for people to penetrate the world of the gods and supernatural creatures.

No matter how you look at it and how you want to Christianize Halloween, it will never be acceptable to God.

Traditionally, adults dress up or put on a mask to pretend to be part of the supernatural. They do this so ghosts who are supposedly roaming around during the Samhain can’t recognize them.

The Encyclopedia of Religion adds, “Fiery tributes and sacrifices of animals, crops, and possibly human beings were made to appease supernatural powers that controlled the fertility of the land. Samhain acknowledged the entire spectrum of nonhuman forces that roamed the earth during that period.”

Divination, sorcery, and witchcraft are common practice during Samhain. Even the famous jack-o-lanterns are originally used to scare off evil spirits. Orange and black are the colors of Halloween. Orange signifies the fall harvest while black is associated with evil.

Compelling reasons you shouldn’t celebrate Halloween

I believe there are a lot of reasons we must avoid Halloween and no reason for us to keep it. As Christians, we are admonished to shun away from every appearance of evil (I Thessalonians 5:22).

Let me give you a few reasons why you shouldn’t celebrate Halloween:

  1. Halloween has a pagan origin
  2. Halloween glorifies Satan
  3. Halloween gives Satan a foothold in our life
  4. Halloween promotes the false idea of immortal soul
  5. Halloween darkens our brightness as a light of the world
  6. We are to separate from the world
  7. Halloween teaches children how to extort other people through “trick and treat”
  8. Halloween promotes too many sweets that can be harmful to our body
  9. Yahshua (Jesus Christ) will never celebrate Halloween
  10. We are instead commanded by God to celebrate His Feasts

These are just some reasons we must avoid celebrating Halloween. If you want a deeper explanation of these reasons, please read, “10 Scary Reasons Why You Should not Celebrate Halloween.”

Does God approve Halloween?

There’s no doubt that the word Halloween does not appear anywhere in the Bible. However, this does not give us license to glorify God in any way we please, and there are overarching principles we need to consider.

In everything we do, we must always look into the Bible to establish our beliefs.

So does God wants us to celebrate Halloween? The plain answer is NO.

Almost all the traditions, beliefs, and practices associated with Halloween are abominations to God. The Bible tells us:

There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,  or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.  For all who do these things are an ABOMINATION to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

God strongly detested sorcerers and witches that He commands them to be put to death (Leviticus 20:27; Exodus 22:18).

Just a harmless celebration?

People argue that Halloween is harmless.

But is it?

Well, the truth is, Halloween is a harmful holiday to be practiced and celebrated.

Halloween is usually the time when people are more focused on Satan. When this happens, people are more susceptible to Satan’s influence and they increase the chance of getting demon-possessed at different levels.

Imagine, why would a Christian celebrate a holiday that glorifies evil, focuses on darkness, death, FEAR, and demonism?

Can we be both Christians and drink the cup of demons and eat on their table? Certainly NOT (I Corinthians 10:21-22). Halloween is the complete opposite of what Christians should meditate upon (Philippians 4:8).

Moreover, God does not want us to celebrate pagan holidays. Samhain and Halloween are no doubt rooted in paganism and God called them abominations. Read Deuteronomy 12:29-30.

Can you really transform an abominable pagan holiday into something that can worship God? Let’s be honest. The obvious answer is no.

(A topic related to this blog, which I believe is another important aspect of shunning away from evil is watching horror movies. Please open this link to a new tab to read about “Top 7 Reasons Christians Should Not Watch Horror Movies.”)

Will you listen to God?

If we are really serious about following God, we need to listen to what He is telling us. The Scripture plainly says that it is wrong to celebrate pagan holidays which include Halloween.

God does not want us to keep Halloween because He loves us. The dark spiritual world is real, and we must not dabble and mess with it. God knows that harm and destruction await for those people who dare to play with Satan and his demons. Thus, God wants us to stay away from Halloween as much as possible.

MAKE A STAND. A true Christian stands on the light and not in darkness. Make sure you are on the right side. Decide right now that you will never again celebrate Halloween and start living in the light of God.

  1. I remember when this ‘craze’ finally arrived on our distant shore and was not happy about it at all. I still cannot believe that mothers think its a great party theme n schools prefer this kind of thing for stories etc for their students. Not that long ago even secular newspapers carried articles about its diabolical history. It has to be another step in the radically wrong direction for our upcoming generations. The future scares me and this is just one area of concern. Jlh
