What are the different powers of Prayer?

There is no question that ALL of the servants of God prayed – no exception. Prayer should automatically be an innate part of the life of every Christian. As we read the Bible, we will discover the different ways on how a simple prayer can change the course of mankind’s history or transform the life of a single soul. So what are the specific ways how the power of prayer is manifested?

1. The power to bring a dead person back to life

God is the giver of life and He has the authority to resurrect a person from the dead. We can read from the Bible how people were brought back from the dead because of praying. Some of the examples include Elijah reviving a child (I Kings 17:21-22) and Jesus resurrecting Lazarus (John 11:41-44).

2. The power to heal the sick

One of the benefits of serving God is the GIFT OF HEALING (Psalm 103:2). We can read in James 5:13-15, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them PRAY over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of the faith will save the sick…”

3. The power to experience divine protection

God is our PROTECTOR. Through prayer, we can ask for God’s divine protection. There are a lot of prayers of protection in the Bible. Some of these include Psalm 25, 71 and 91, II Chronicles 20:6-12, and Ezra 8:21-23.

4. The power to conceive a child

We have seen some barren women whom God healed so that they can conceive. Through their fervent prayers, God heard them and granted their request. These biblical women include Sarah (Genesis 21:1-3), Rebekah (Genesis 25:21), Rachel (Genesis 30:22-24), and Hannah (I Samuel 1:11-18).

5. The power to stop the rain

James wrote that Elijah “was a man with a nature like ours, and he EARNESTLY PRAYED that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit” (James 5:17).

6. The power to be forgiven of sin

Prayers can help us to be forgiven. The Bible tells us to repent of our sins during our prayers. We are all sinners (Romans 6:23), and it is critical that we habitually ask for God’s forgiveness. Thankfully, when we repent of our sins, God will readily forgive us provided that we do our part as well (I John 1:9; Mark 11:25).

7. The power to make the sun stand still

One of the most intriguing supernatural events in the Old Testament is when Joshua prayed to God to stop the hands of time (Joshua 10:12-14).

8. The power to attain blessings

God is the real source of blessings, and we can always pray to Him. One good example of this is the prayer of Jabez where he prayed for God’s true blessings and God granted His petition (I Chronicles 4:10).

9. The power to obtain wisdom

Solomon is known to be the WISEST KING on the face of the earth during His time. However, this is not because of his effort. It was God who granted Him tremendous wisdom (I Kings 3:5-15). Today, we can also pray for God to give us wisdom (James 1:5).

10. The power to bring fire down from heaven

In his confrontation with the prophets of Baal, Elijah was able to summon fire from heaven and consume his offering after praying to God (I Kings 18:30-38).

These are just some of the INCREDIBLE examples of the power of prayer. While it is true that some of these prayers are miraculously answered, we can still confidently conclude that THERE IS POWER IN PRAYERS. God, who is not bound by the physical laws, can do anything to fulfill his will and purpose here on earth. We can ask God ABSOLUTELY anything as long as it is according to His will.

Harnessing the Power of Prayer

Now that we know the power of prayer, we can have the assurance that our prayers will not be in vain. The power of our prayer lies on the GREATEST RULING POWER IN THIS INFINITE UNIVERSE and as Christians and children of God, we have the privilege to tap into that.

I sincerely hope that we all recognize the inconceivable, enormous, and LIMITLESS POWER of prayer and this power is for all of us to use. All we have to do is to come humbly to God’s throne of grace and pray.
