The central message of the Passover is the ultimate sacrifice made by God the Father and Jesus Christ to redeem us from our sin.

The Passover reminds us of the unconditional and unending love of God to the point that He sacrificed His Son for us (John 3:16). But we need to ask: why did Jesus Christ have to die?

Is there another better way to redeem us from our sin? Could there be an easier way to solve the problem of humanity?

The Penalty of Sin

There is no doubt: we are all sinners.

The Apostle Paul tells us, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

The Apostle John also added, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (John 1:8).

The first human beings, Adam and Eve, sinned and we have been sinning ever since.

But what is sin? John tells us that “sin is lawlessness” or it is the “transgression of the law” (I John 3:4).

In simpler terms, sin is breaking God’s commandments. Just like in our civil law, when you break it, there’s a corresponding penalty. The law of God is no different. When you break God’s law, you have to pay its penalty.

So what is the penalty for sin? The moment we sinned (broken God’s commandment), we automatically incurred the penalty of sin, which is DEATH. Paul added, “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Since all of us have sinned, we deserve to be put to death and this death will be an ETERNAL death. All hope is gone unless someone will save us from our sin.

The payment for our sins

Thankfully, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son (John 3:16).

Indeed, the penalty we have to pay for sinning is death “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). God showed His love toward us, in that, “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

But why would Jesus be chosen to die for all humanity?

For one, no human being is sinless. No human being is worthy to die for another man since he, himself, is a sinner. Even if there is a sinless human being (which is impossible), his life is only enough to pay for the sin of one human being and not the entire humanity.

Jesus Christ is the only One who is worthy enough to die for all of us. He is a God who became flesh (John 1:14). He lived a sinless life (Hebrews 4:15). Therefore, He did not earn the penalty of sin.

Since Yahshua is a God in the flesh, He is the Creator of all things (John 3:1-3), and He did not sin, His single life is ENOUGH to pay the penalty of all the sins ever been committed by the entire humanity!

From the foundation of the world, Christ was destined to one day live a human life and die for all humanity (Hebrews 9:26). The Mesiah is known to be the “Lamb slain[ed] from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). Imagine that the suffering of Jesus has already started long before He came to this world.

Yahshua Christ humbly took the role of the Passover Lamb (John 1:29) who will be killed as an offering and payment for our sins. Paul described it this way:

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a BONDSERVANT, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of DEATH, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:5-8).

Final Words

We must seriously consider the sacrifice that God the Father and Jesus Christ have made just to save us from our sins.

Now that we have been given the opportunity to be part of God’s family, we need to live this life according to their will and purpose. We need to stop sinning – the very reason that Christ died for us – and start keeping the commandments of God.
