Tired of Being a Christian? Read This Before Giving Up!

Are you tired of being a Christian? I am. I think almost all of us have experienced that feeling when all you want is to just give up and throw the towel. There are some instances in a Christian life when everything seems not to make sense. You try your best to understand why things are happening the way it is. Whether you are suffering from health problems, persecution, trials, and challenges, there is no doubt that we tend to feel exhausted and just want to quit.

In times like this, what must be our attitude? Should we really just take heed the voice at the back of our mind and grab the opportunity to give up? Should we just give in when every ounce of our being is shouting, “I had enough”?

Being tired is a good sign

Though it may sound absurd, but being tired is a good sign. A Christian life is not a life of comfort, but a life of overcoming. If you are a Christian and you feel like nothing is challenging your faith, then it is time for you to reconsider the path you are taking. You might be in the wrong direction.

A Christian life is not a sprint, but it is a marathon.

Being tired means you are struggling. Being tired means you are fighting. Yes, it is a sign of exhaustion, but it is also a sign of courage, faith, and zeal. Being tired will only become a problem the moment you decided to GIVE UP. Don’t equate being tired to giving up. They are not the same.

A life of endurance

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Master, said, “… he who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22). Paul supported Jesus’s statement by saying, “We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22).

There is no doubt that if we are going to follow Jesus, we are expected to deny ourselves and take up our own cross. Those who seek to save their life will lose it and those who lose their life for Jesus’ sake will find it (Matthew 16:24-26).

A Christian life is not a sprint, but it is a marathon. It is a race of endurance and it is perfectly normal to get tired. It is undeniable that being tired is a typical part of the Christian race. However, there is NO second prize in the Christian race. It is either you finish it or not and it is certain that those who give up will never be able to finish the race set before them.

We must all remember that the prize of the Christian race is NEVER given at the beginning.

No one is rewarded because they have started a race. You will only be given the crown of righteousness when you finally cross the finish line.

Therefore, rest as you must, BUT NEVER QUIT! Never give up! Yes, the Christian life is never easy, but it is not impossible! Quitting is NEVER an option! Quitting should be out of the question! A true and genuine Christian is not a quitter, but an OVERCOMER! All you have to do is to look to Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Not just a request, but a command

Thankfully, through the grace and mercy of God, we are not expected to fight our own battle. Jesus Christ said:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Did you grasp that marvelous and wonderful statement from Jesus Christ? He wants us to come to Him and He will give us rest.

My friend, this is not just a request, but a COMMAND!

We are commanded by Jesus to come to Him.

Every time when we feel like giving up;

When we feel our arms are weak and our knees are wobbling;

When we feel like God is not answering our prayers;

When things are not going according to our plan;

When we cried out to God in tears and our voice seems not to go beyond the roof;

When we feel like we can’t even make another step anymore; remember the words of Jesus Christ!  He said, “COME TO ME!”

The Apostle Peter added:

“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting ALL your care upon Him for He cares for you” (I Peter 5:7).

We must cast ALL our cares on God. Not just a little, not just some, but ALL OUR CARES, 100%, no holding back!

If there is something that’s bothering you, then bring it to God. Present it before His Holy Throne of grace! You can claim this promise from God! You can talk to God and ask Him to take care of all your cares.

You know why? Because “He cares for us”. This reason may look like a simple reason, but it is a very POWERFUL and GREAT reason. This reason is more than enough.

NEVER EVER COMMIT THE MISTAKE that you can do it all alone. No, that’s not being a Christian, that’s being human. God the Father and Jesus Christ is ABLE and is more than willing to SAVE US FROM OUR EXHAUSTION. They are MIGHTY and most of all, faithful to their promises. If God promises that He will help us, then we can count on that promise!

Out of weakness were made strong

Have you read the Faith Chapter, Hebrews 11? In this chapter, many faithful men and women have been mentioned because of their faith. But do you know that all of them have not begun with an unshakeable and strong faith? Hebrews 11:34 tells us that these people, out of weakness, were made strong!

stress_man_handAll of us may be tired and weak, but God promises us that He will give us the necessary strength that we need to overcome if only we would ask Him for it.

The Apostle Paul earnestly pleaded God to take away the thorn in his flesh, but God has a better plan for him. He said:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (II Corinthians 11:9).

In most cases, when we are weak and tired, that is the time when we recognize our true source of strength! When we are tired, that is the time we must go closer to God, instead of giving up and going the opposite way.

Our spiritual muscles will not develop through laziness and passiveness. We will never grow in a life of comfort and inactivity! We need to be dynamic, zealous, and MOTIVATED to strengthen and build our spiritual muscles.

When you face trial, be JOYFUL! You know why? Because “the testing of your faith produces patience”. After that, “let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:2-4).

A true and genuine Christian is not a quitter, but an OVERCOMER!

God can’t use Christians who don’t know how it feels like to go through tribulations. God cannot use Christians who don’t even know how to overcome trials. Most especially, God cannot use Christians who don’t have the guts to stand up for what’s right!

God will only use you when “the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (I Peter 1:7).

Remembering the promises of God

Let us all be reminded that “no temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is FAITHFUL, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (I Corinthians 10:13).

We need to remember that God promises us that we will not be tempted or tested beyond what we are able! Therefore, if you think you are facing a very difficult trial, you can have the confidence that you are able to bear that trial. God will provide you a way of escape for you to bear it!

If you think your trial is so difficult, then be joyous and be glad. This means that is how much God believes in you. He believes that you are able to overcome this problem and He will never leave you without any help!

Above all, let us never think that our labor and all the sacrifices we have done for the sake of God will be in vain. They will never be forgotten. God notices every effort you have done.

Hebrews 6:10 tells us:

“For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name…”

I Corinthians 15:58 encourages as well:

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord”.

Final words

With all these being said, there is really no need for us to quit! God is always fair, just, and merciful. He sees when we are struggling, but as long as we keep on running our Christian race, we will overcome.

Indeed, we can become tired. But we must never give up. We can always find courage and strength in the word of God. Therefore, I want to leave you with these encouraging words from the book of Isaiah. If you are tired, I want you to inculcate in your heart and mind every word of these very powerful verses. Above all, pray to God that He will grant you strength and power to overcome. Please meditate upon Isaiah 40:28-31.

Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:28-31).

  1. This is all Bible quotes and no real life experience. It seems like a contrived just do it. Well there are people in dire circumstances out here that need real help and just quoting Bible verses to them is not enough cuz if it were enough why are they still in a bad situation????

    • Hi Lish!

      Everyone’s situation is unique. I understand everyone is going through various things and I can’t possibly cover everything in one single blog.

      However, as you may read here, this blog is more than just bible verses. Moreover, God does not promise us a comfortable life, but He promised that He will be with us and that should be enough.

      If you are struggling with a problem right now, I advise you seek help from people whom you know have godly wisdom. They can certainly take your personal circumstance into consideration when helping you and hopefully give you sound biblical advice.

    • Been in that spot and in it now ,feelings are our feelings ! We choose to believe the truth or not ,And feelings all around will scream other wise! Faith the Substance of things hoped for ,It all starts in the spirit realm ,We choose to let our lips agree with truth or the situations ,we have authority ,what we agree with is the source we attract ,example we say we are sick we have agreed with the symptoms and allow the enemy to move as he works in the realm of sin sickness death poverty ect ,Or we agree with the living word ,truth !and attract life , remember HE and his angles look for his word were he may perform it! A wise person told me this yes we have the promises ,Yet it is up to the giver when he gives ,we do not dictate that !We are to renew our mind to his way of thinking ,feelings will follow ! He looks at the big pic our being transformed ,Like a kid myself I want it I want it fixed and now ,It hurts ,Its frustrating ,Its plays on our eyes emotions ,feelings! Like a parent he sees the big pic ,we do not !,question do we really believe he loves us ,!If true ,We trust rest , Simple not always easy when everything else screams other wise! Its ok to feel like quitting that is your feelings ,Just do not let you feelings decide ,as that is were the enemy plays his games ! Choose what you , who you believe then get supportive wise council and love from those that shoot straight ,Have been there not just book and word knowledge ! best to you

      • Thanks for your reply, Jim. You have given a few good points. Indeed, ultimately, the choice is ours. God can’t force us to believe in Him or follow Him. It should be us who will make that decision.

  2. Umm, I’m sure most Christians have already read these scriptures over and over and over and over again, that’s one of the reasons I can’t read the Bible genuinely anymore because even before I read it, 99% of the promises are not kept, unanswered prayers… well they’re answered but it’s almost always No or wait for a decade or (three) . Why do we pray if prayer doesn’t change God’s mind? He’s still do HIS will. I’ve read the Bible cover to cover and I was way better before I was ‘saved’ now sitting here, trying to be good coz I’ve been saved by Jesus, trying to please him is total boredom, loneliness and I go in and out of depression.we are living a fake life, waiting to be saved by a God we don’t even know for sure, Christianity is brainwash. My great grandma didn’t know this religion and I’m sure they won’t go to this ‘hell’ Christianity teaches. I’m spiritual but I’m done with this Christianity teaching. It’s a lie

    • Hi Kiki,

      I’m sorry to hear about your situation.

      Prayers are not only there to get what we want. In most cases, it is there to ask God’s will in your life to happen.

      If your prayers are not being answered the way you want it to be, then I’m sure God has a better plan for you.

      If you wish to learn more, you may read 8 Powerful Ways for God to Hear your Prayer: https://becomingchristians.com/2015/05/07/8-powerful-ways-for-god-to-hear-your-prayer/

      I know nothing I can say will convince you in going back to Christianity as it is not my job to do so. I’m only here to share the word of God and every one has different ways to respond to what they learn.

      But what I can tell you is that if you stay in faith and genuinely want to fulfill God’s purpose in your life, whether your prayers are answered the way you want it or not, it won’t matter anymore because ultimately, you know that God has your best interest in mind.

    • Helo Kiki, I just read your comment today, it made me think more and more. However I just have to trust God in whatever situation I go through.
      My question to you , if you are accessible now, how are you doing recently. Has God not done anything to this very day?? I wish to learn from you.
      Much love
