The Madness of Modern Christianity: Can you be a Christian and reject the Bible?

For many centuries, the Bible is regarded to be infallible, truthful, and error-free. However, for the past decades, we have seen the increasing doubt and skepticism toward the Bible. What was once regarded to be an irrefutable book has now become the subject of ridicule, malice, and distrust.

There is no doubt, the Bible is known to be the BEST-SELLING BOOK of all time and yet, it is the most misunderstood book. With this in mind, it should not come as a surprise why a big group of Christians doesn’t believe all the words written in the Bible anymore.

Is it really true that you can be a Christian while dismissing some portions of the Bible and calling them fable and outdated? Can you really be called a Christian by just simply believing the New Testament and disregard the Old Testament? Finally, can you be a Christian without entirely believing the Bible?

How does Jesus see the Scripture?

Christians are called Christians because they believe and follow Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is crucial to see what Jesus said about the Scripture. In this point in time, it is important to note that there is no Bible as we know it during the time of Jesus Christ. What they have is the Old Testament and therefore, any reference to the scripture means it is the Old Testament.

Jesus said:

“DO NOT THINK that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled” (Matthew 5:17-18).

In this Biblical passage, Jesus is seen to be upholding the scripture. He states that He is not to destroy the Law or the Prophets – referring to the Old Testament writing. Jesus has high respect to the scriptures that He will not destroy but instead to FULFILL it.

Therefore, why would Jesus fulfill something that supposed to be “doubtful” and “false”? Certainly, Jesus believes that the Old Testament writings are truth and they deserve our complete trust.

Jesus said again:

“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by EVERY word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ “(Matthew 4:4).

What is the word of God? The word of God is the Bible, both the New and Old Testament. Jesus is saying that we must live by EVERY word that proceeds from the mouth of God. We have seen time and time again that Jesus always quotes the Old Testament. Why would Jesus quote something that we should not believe to be true?

In John 10:35, we can find Jesus saying this PLAIN TRUTH:

“… The scripture CANNOT be broken.”

This is a very PURE and CLEAR biblical passage right from the mouth of Jesus Christ. He would further say, “Sanctify them by Your truth. YOUR WORD IS TRUTH” (John 17:7).

With all these verses, it is very EVIDENT that the Bible, the original word of God, contains no error or contradiction. Jesus CONFIRMS the veracity of the Bible. If we really see Jesus as our divine MASTER, we must believe what He says. Since He says that the word of God, the Bible, is true, then we must also believe Jesus Christ at face value.

What does the Apostle Paul say about the Bible?

Modern Christianity greatly depends their doctrine on the writings of Paul. The majority of the New Testament letters are written by Paul. Therefore, we should also see what he thinks about the Bible.

“All Scripture is given by Inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (II Timothy 3:16).

The Apostle Paul clearly states that ALL scripture is given by the inspiration of God. There is no doubt in Paul’s mind that whatever was written in the Bible is true and proven. The Greek word for inspiration here is theopneustos, which literally means, GOD-BREATHED!

Did you grasp that? Every word WRITTEN in the Bible is INSPIRED by God. It is given by His very breath. This is truly something that we need to consider! The Bible is the VERY WORD of God and we can have the confidence that whatever written in it can be taken as truth and fact!

Reading the Bible is like reading the very MIND OF GOD.

Paul later added that GOD CANNOT LIE (Titus 1:2). If this is the case, then we can be sure that if someone says that there is an error in the Bible and you should not completely believe it then that person is the LIAR and not God.

What does the Apostle Peter say about the truthfulness of the Bible?

Peter is known to be the acting leader of the disciples when Jesus was still in the human flesh. What does Peter say about the Bible?

“Knowing this first, that NO prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation (or origin), for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were MOVED by the Holy Spirit” (II peter 1:20-21).

Peter recognizes that the origin of the Scripture is not of man, but of GOD. All the words written in the Bible are all inspired by God through His power, the Holy Spirit! Though the Bible is written by men, all authors of the Bible are MOVED by the Holy Spirit.

Can you be a Christian and not believe the Bible?

By now, the answer should be obvious. The answer is an absolute NO! Christians are supposed to be Bible-believing people. If there would be people who would doubt the veracity and truthfulness of the Bible, it wouldn’t be Christians.

I have met a lot of people who call themselves Christians and yet, not believe everything in the Bible. They argue that some of the stories in the Bible are fables and myths. They think that the parting of Red Sea, the Re-Creation Week, Tower of Babel, and Noah’s flood are just primitive effort of the Bible writers to explain the world around them.

These people would rather believe in the theory of evolution, which is something that had remained as a THEORY because they can’t really prove it. As a matter of fact, it takes MORE faith to believe in the theory of evolution than to believe in God’s explanation!

Consequences of not believing the Bible

Not believing the Bible means that you don’t believe in ABSOLUTE TRUTHS. This means that truths are subjective and it really depends on how a person view the truth. This is a dangerous road to take because you just make yourself a god of yourself.

Who are you to determine which part of the Bible is true and which is not? Who are you to say that God’s word is not entirely true and we should just be selective about what we want to believe? Are you better than God?

Just because you cannot explain something in the Bible it means that it is not true. Just because you find it hard to obey the commandments of God that you look for errors in the Bible and use that as a basis of not following His commands. Just because you think that some of the biblical passages are unfair, irrational, and old-fashioned, you will be selective of what you should believe.

It is TREMENDOUSLY ILLOGICAL and even STUPID to call yourself a Christian while not believing the Bible. Not believing the BIBLE is TANTAMOUNT to calling God a liar.

The Apostle John said:

“He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son” (I John 5:10).

If you don’t want to believe the Bible then STOP calling yourself a Christian! God wants Christians who TRULY believe His word and would have the willingness to obey Him.

Choose to believe the Bible

The Prophet Samuel has this to say about indecisive Christians:

“How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him” (I Kings 18:21).

So who do you want to follow? Would you follow God and believe in the Bible? Or will you follow Baal and your own understanding and reject the word of God?

The choice is yours. THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND! It is either you believe the Bible or not. There is no way you can just believe some portions and dismiss the rest as fables and pigment of imagination. That’s not what you call Christianity. That’s what you call humanity!

Believe God! Believe the Bible! And by then, you are now ready to be a Christian!

  1. I found this to correspond with my beliefs only one section I don’t quite find scripture. That man has another chance after death in the next life. Not sure what our godlike mission will be, I believe we will reign with Christ in the milliennilum. Main thing we all need is to be born into the family of God. That we agree

    • Hi Sybil! Thanks for your comment. I strongly believe that there is only one chance for us to salvation. For those God are calling right now, they are having their chance right now. However, for billions of people who have not heard about God, they will have their chance after the millennium when the dead, both small and great, will be resurrected.

  2. Your article follows a predictable course: start off with an interesting premise or title that seems to suggest the author is about to posit his or her own opinion, and then instead cram as many Bible passages in as possible without actually offering an opinion beyond that of “agree with this book or face eternal torture”. You say “God is not a liar”, but you are quite wrong, and there are many instances in the Bible where God deceives and tells lies. God also creates evil, so by definition he must also be capable of lies and deception. Indeed, did he not deceive Pharoah by hardening his heart to prevent him from releasing the Israelites? You also say there are no contradictions in the Bible. Again you are wrong. There are literally hundreds of contradictions. One in particular concerns the serpent in Eden. God told Adam that he would die if he ate the apple. The serpent told Eve she would not die if she ate it. And indeed, she didn’t die. So God lied and there was a contradiction. With such glaring contradictions, is it little wonder that some people conclude that this book cannot be the word of God? You say EVERY word of the Bible was inspired by God. Are you sure? Does that include the God-ordained gang-rape (and subsequent butchery) of the concubine in place of His angels in the book of Judges? If so, I would not want to spend an eternity with such a deity.

    • Hi Paul,

How ironic it is for your name is Paul and not believe the Bible.

      1. God is not a liar. Give me a verse to prove your point.

      2. God used Pharaoh’s wickedness to show to the world and to the Israelites how powerful He is. Pharaoh isn’t a just man. Instead, he is wicked and sinful. Pharaoh’s heart is already hard, and God capitalized on that to further advance His purpose.

      3. God said that Adam and Eve will die on the day they will eat the forbidden fruit. God did not lie. Why? II Peter 3:8 tells us, “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”

      4. I don’t read any gang rape ordained by God in the book of Judges.

You are free of what you want to believe and there’s no doubt: no words of mine can convince or convert you unless God opens your heart. Yahshua said that no one can come to Him unless God draws that person to Him (John 6:44).

May you find the peace in your life and your ultimate God-given purpose.

      Regards,
      Joshua
