Singing the Song of Fools: Questions Christians Should Ask When Choosing a Song

Music is known to be the language of the soul. It is so powerful that it can be used to worship God or worship the devil. Sad to say, as we look into our society today, we found that music is no doubt being used as an instrument of Satan to destroy us.

Solomon, the wisest king during his time, has this to say:

“It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools” (Ecclesiastes 7:5).

With this in mind, let me ask this question:

ARE WE SINGING THE SONGS OF FOOLS?

Let me give you a quick recap of some of the most popular songs being played:

  1. Born This Way by Lady Gaga
  2. Dear Future Husband by Meghan Trainor
  3. Shake It Off by Taylor Shift
  4. Blank Space by Taylor Shift
  5. The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars
  6. Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars
  7. Stay with Me by Sam Smith
  8. We Can’t Stop by Miley Cyrus
  9. Live While We’re Young by One Direction
  10. Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke

If you have these songs on your music list, I’m sorry to say this, but you are singing the songs of fools. There are a lot of songs I can add to this list, but I know you got my point. Some of these songs may not be obviously outright immoral, but if you look deeper into the messages of their lyrics, you will soon discover the FINGERPRINTS OF SATAN in these songs.

Singing the Song of Fools Questions Christians Should Ask When Choosing a Song

Discovering the Songs of Fools

So what makes a song qualified as a song of fools? Let me show you some examples.

Here’s an excerpt from the song Dear Future Husband:

After every fight
Just apologize
And maybe then I’ll let you try and rock my body right (right)
Even if I was wrong
[Laugh] You know I’m never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?

This song tells you a selfish kind of love. If a man wants the love of this woman, according to the whole song, the man should be a slave to the woman. And yet, you hear many single and even married women singing this song.

Here’s another excerpt from the song Blurred Lines:

Ok, now he was close
Tried to domesticate you
But you’re an animal
Baby, it’s in your nature
Just let me liberate you

If you continue listening to this music, you will hear profanity and message of sexual immorality. It is hard to imagine why Christians enjoy music like this. Satan is very successful in poisoning the air with so much garbage and profanity through the music we listen to.

Finally, let me share this one last excerpt from the song Stay with Me:

Guess it’s true, I’m not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love ’cause I’m just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don’t want you to leave, will you hold my hand?

I first heard this in a singing contest. The singer is just ten years old and he sings this kind of song. Can you IMAGINE a young kid saying, “I’m not good at a one-night stand”? I wonder why adults don’t even bother to correct that kid.

Can you IMAGINE a ten-year old kid saying, “I’m not good at a one-night stand”?

I don’t have enough time to really go to each of these songs and why I counted them as songs of fools. I believe we won’t have enough time to cover all bad music out there. So let me share with you quick ways on how to choose the right music for Christians.

Questions Christians should ask when choosing songs

There are guiding principles that we can use when determining whether a particular song is fit to be sung by Christians or not. Before you choose a song that will remain in your music playlist, here are 5 questions to ask:

  1. What is the message of the song?

All songs have their own message. Pick any song and read the lyrics. You will quickly identify the message of the song. For example, when you read the lyrics of Bruno Mars’ hit song, Uptown Funk, you will find that the lyrics are about glorying the self. The song is full of pride and states how hot the singer is. You can even hear the word hallelujah being used to praise himself! What a BLASPHEMOUS man!

  1. Does the lyrics of the song break Biblical principles?

As Christians, we need to examine the lyrics of the song. If you find any profane, cursing, lustful, violent, nasty, and immoral word or phrase, then quickly mark that song as a song of the fools. No matter how catchy or beautiful the melody is, the lyrics have disqualified the song to be in your music playlist.

One good example is the song of Taylor Swift, Blank Space. It looks innocent, right? But read these lyrics:

“Magic, madness, heaven, sin,

Saw you there and I thought oh my god Look at that face,

You look like my next mistake”.

The song includes the expression, “oh my god”. This is certainly an example of using God’s name in vain. It may look innocent, but it is an outright disrespect to God. Singing this song means that we don’t anymore have the godly fear to revere His Name and we just reduce Him to a mere expression.

  1. How is this song being used?

There are some songs that have beautiful lyrics and a good message. However, sometimes, if you look how these songs are being used, it changes everything.

For example, the song Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding. The lyrics and message seem nice. Nevertheless, this song is used as a soundtrack for the movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, a SHAMEFUL soft porn that has even been shown on the BIG SCREEN!

When looking at a song, better look into its music video as well. Look how the video interprets the song. From there, you will get an idea if it is a song of fools or not.

  1. What is the lifestyle of the music artist?

As what Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). As you look into the values and moral standards of a song artist, do you see how his or her life reflects godliness? When you examine their life, you will most probably have a clue how they will write and sing their music.

  1. Will you be able to share the song with God the Father or Jesus Christ?

If you can HONESTLY say that you can share your headphone with God or Jesus while listening to a particular music, then that would be a good choice.

If you let God run through your music playlist, will there be a song that He wants you to delete? If yes, DELETE it immediately.

These are some of the important questions you need to ask when choosing the right kind of music. To really arrive at the right answer, you need God’s help and wisdom. So pray to God that He will grant you wisdom and an obedient heart to really do what is right. By doing this, you will eventually see that you are not singing the song of fools anymore.

Called to a higher standard

Does it really matter which songs we sing or listen to? The obvious answer is, YES. Every aspect of our life, including music, should reflect the godly character that God wants us to build.

We are Christians and we are called to live a HOLY LIFE – a life separate from the ways of this world. We are called to live a higher standard.

Jesus commands us:

“Therefore you shall be PERFECT, just as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).

This mandate is no doubt very difficult to do, but Jesus expects us to strive for perfection nonetheless. There is no doubt that when you ask the questions I listed above, you will soon see the number of the songs in your playlist significantly decreases.

If you see a song that violates Godly principles, DELETE IT! NEVER EVER HESITATE to remove it from your playlist.

DON’T LISTEN TO IT.

Make a STAND against immorality! We are Christians and that is supposed what we are expected to do. We are not here to support the work of Satan. We are here to OPPOSE it.

We must realize that PLEASING GOD is more important than our entertainment.

If you have to erase ALL THE SONGS in your playlist because they are ungodly, then SO BE IT! You will still definitely live without them! But if you still choose to listen to the SONGS OF FOOLS, then God will hold you accountable for that.

So make a choice, my friend. Will you please God or please yourself? Will you sing the songs of fools and be one of them? Or will you use music to glorify God?

Choose wisely. You know why? Because GREAT REWARD awaits those who live a Godly and righteous life today.
