Should Christians be celebrating New Year? It might be a surprise to you but the glaring answer to this question is NO. In this blog post, let me share with you 5 reasons Christians should not participate in the New Year Celebration.

The New Year’s Eve is among the most awaited time of the year. Many people gather together to witness the year’s transition from December 31 to January 1. The event is often accompanied by revelries, parties, fireworks, loud music, and other types of noise.

For most people, it is only natural to celebrate the New Year. However, as Christians, have you stopped and think about how God views this celebration? Have you checked your Bible what it really says about the New Year?

In this post, you will read why you should not participate in New Year’s celebration. Read on and discover the truth about the New Year!

Reason no. 1: God does NOT view January 1 as the first day of the year

If you read the Bible, you will see that January 1 is nowhere near the first day of the year. Exodus 12:1-2 tells us:

And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, “This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you”.

Notice, it was the LORD who spoke unto Moses and Aaron. It is not some kind of Roman emperor or any human being. So, it is very clear that God, Himself, decreed this.

God says January 1 is not the first day of the year. Man says it is the first day of the year.

So who will you believe?

What’s the name of the first month? It is called Nisan or Abib. Read Esther 3:7.

“In the first month, which is the month of Nisan.”

Compare to Exodus 13:4. The month of Abib occurs in March or April. The date is not fixed as it is based on the lunar cycle.

Therefore, from a biblical perspective, the year actually begins during the spring and not on the dead of winter. It is also marked with a new moon. This follows logic as spring symbolizes a new beginning compared to winter where it is all cold, dreary, and gloomy.

Reason no. 2: It’s a pagan celebration

If God did not decree January 1 as the first day of the year, then who did? Julius Caesar did it in 46 B.C.

January 1 was chosen to honor the Pagan God Janus, where January got its name. He is the god of gates and doors in Roman mythology. People prayed to Janus every New Year’s Eve and asked him something new in their lives.

Janus is portrayed with two faces – one face looking to the past while the other looking to the future. January 1 is considered as a sacred day to the followers of Janus.

Even the mistletoe that has been connected to the New Year celebration has its pagan roots. It is anciently related to pagan worship and immoral sexual rituals.

God does not want His followers celebrating any pagan celebration. God strongly commands not to learn the way of the heathen (Jeremiah 10:2). He even considers pagan celebration as an abomination (Deuteronomy 12:31). He added, “What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it” (verse 32).

Reason no. 3: Satan tampered the Gregorian calendar  

Have you noticed the names of the months in the Gregorian calendar? They are all tampered. Consider September, October, November, and December. If you take the meaning of these months you will get the following:

• September – septe – seven
• October – octo – eight
• November – nona – nine
• December – deca – ten

September is supposed to be the seventh month; however, it is now the ninth month. October is supposed to be the eighth month, but it has become the tenth month. November is supposed to be the eighth month and December should be the tenth month.

Can you now see the great deception Satan has caused on this earth? Yet, most people don’t know this and even don’t care.

Reason no. 4: New Year celebration is chaotic

New Year’s Eve is a time where people party all night. People party like there’s no tomorrow. People get drunk, complete strangers exchange kisses, dark nightclubs are filled with people in tuxedoes and gowns, music being played to its maximum volume, others irresponsibly point their pistol into the air and fires off a few rounds, while the hospitals are busy attending to people injured by firecrackers.

It is not difficult to see why God condemns pagan celebrations. Most people use this kind of celebrations as an excuse to irresponsibly behave and then, suffer long-term consequences.

God is not the author of confusion (I Corinthians 14:33). If you look into the New Year celebration itself, there is a lot of confusion and chaos. Certainly, you can’t find any fingerprint of God in this celebration.

Reason no. 5: True Christians should imitate Jesus Christ

Christians are called Christians because they ought to follow Yahshua the Messiah or popularly known as Jesus Christ.

There is no single indication from the Bible that Jesus would participate in New Year celebration. In contrast, Jesus Christ celebrated the God-ordained festivals found in Leviticus 23.

If we are going to be really honest to ourselves, it is very clear that Jesus won’t like us to participate in New Year celebration. He wants us to follow His examples instead.

Does it really matter?

The answer is YES! It does matter if you really want to please God and Jesus Christ.

God will not command something that will be bad for us. If He says we must not participate in New Year Celebration, then so be it. We can trust God that it is the best choice for us. It is for our own good.

Since we live in this world governed by Satan, we acknowledge that the secular society operates within the Roman calendar. But that should just end there. Being involved in New Year celebration as Christians is not appropriate.

Jesus Christ commanded us to be lights of the world (Matthew 5:14). Be a light to the world by standing up for what’s right. In the end, we, as Christians, do not live to please men, but we live to please God.
