With over 2 billion monthly active users, Facebook is no doubt the king of social media working sites! While it presents a lot of benefits and enables us to harness the power of connectivity, it also presents an ugly problem.

People are getting addicted or even hooked to Facebook. They are so addicted to the point that the first thing they do in the morning is to reach their smartphones and open this popular app.

If you are among these people, it is time to change your life. There’s a good reason why Facebook shouldn’t be the first thing you should be facing. Let me share with you some of the reasons why you shouldn’t use Facebook first thing in the morning.

Reduced Productivity

For many of us, we might have the habit of checking out our Facebook news feed when the alarm clock goes off. After hitting the snooze button, we customarily grab our smartphones and see the updates on Facebook.

This is a good habit if you want to reduce your productivity.

The Problem with Opening Facebook First Thing in the Morning

How you spend your morning can potentially define your priorities in life.

Flicking through Facebook in the morning can easily go out of hand. Instead of jumping out of our bed immediately and starting our task for the day, we are glued to our phone or tablet screen. We might tell ourselves to just read it for a few minutes, but then our bed makes us comfortable and pulls us back to passiveness.

Lost Focus

The secret behind being focused is to eliminate distractions. If you are easily distracted first thing in the morning because of using Facebook, then you can easily lose focus.

To accomplish your work for the day, you need to be focused on only one task at a time. Now, Facebook is so effective when it comes to causing us to lose track of our priorities for the day. It steals away your concentration.

Since Facebook is filled with so many news, updates, and announcements, our focus will further die down as we go deeper and deeper into our news feed.

Lost time

If you lose an hour in the morning, chances are, you will struggle in recovering that hour for the rest of the day. Using Facebook in the morning is like starting our day with the wrong foot. Time is of the essence and if you are not careful, you can easily lose precious minutes.

Lost energy

Mornings are great because it is the time we normally have renewed strength. With a good night rest, we feel fresh. However, when we use Facebook, we waste some of those energies – energies that could have used for better things and increased productivity.

Lost opportunity to be with God

What we do in the morning speaks volume to what we really feel important in our lives. If you spend the first moments of your day praying and simply talking to God, then that’s your priority in life.

However, if the first thing you do in the morning is to check Facebook, guess what, Facebook is more important for you than God. Whether you admit it or not, that’s the reality.

I have written the importance of starting your day with God. Please read, “How’s Your Prayer Life?

Christian Reflection

So what does this mean for us Christians? It means a lot for us. Instead of flicking through Facebook, why not open our Bible and pray? If there is a friend in this world that we need to check his updates or plan for us, then it should be God.

I’m not saying that Facebook is bad. In fact, it is very helpful in connecting people and preaching the Gospel. However, if you put that between you and God, then you’re making Facebook an idol, which is against the first commandment (Genesis 20:3).

Jesus Christ (Yahshua the Messiah) said that we must seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). This must be our top priority in life. How you spend your morning defines how much you value God’s way of life.

So the next time you open your eyes in the morning, don’t grab your phone but grab your Bible. Bend your knees and pray. Ask for God’s blessings for the day and you will surely have a better day ahead of you.

  1. Good post and I am guilty of checking Facebook, first thing when I wake up. I use to read devotional, but I have gotten out of the habit. I also use to read my bible at night before bed. Thanks for the reminder.
