Imagine yourself wearing black clothes and a black mask. You decided to go up to heaven and break into the divine treasury of God. Inside, you find various treasures, gold, money, and other precious things. There are even things that only God can possess. So what you did is to help yourself and steal as many treasures as possible.

Sounds crazy, right?

It may even be unthinkable and unimaginable for many of us. We think that it is impossible to rob God and we could never do such a terrible crime.

Even the most brilliant, gifted, and cunning robbers in the world could never pull such an impossible feat. As absurd as it may sound, many people are guilty of one of the greatest crimes in the universe – robbing God.

But how exactly this is done?

The Incredible Way to Rob God

How do you rob God?

So let’s go to our main topic. Can you really rob God? If yes, how do you do it? Here’s the answer:

“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings” (Malachi 3:8).

It is very clear that people can rob God by not tithing and giving offerings. Now, those aren’t my word. I didn’t invent that. You take your Bible and read it for yourself.

According to the study made by the Barna Group, only 5% of adult Americans tithe! Can you imagine 95% of the American adult population robbing God???

Now, that’s just in the United States. That number could even be greater if you take into consideration the entire world.

The cost of robbing God

What did Jesus teach about tithing?

Like any crime we commit, there’s a penalty we should pay. What will happen if we rob God?

Malachi continues:

“YOU ARE UNDER A CURSE—your whole nation—because you are robbing me” (Malachi 3:9).

People think that not giving to God is the way to get richer or financially stable. However, it is just the opposite!

We, as humans, tend to think that getting more can lead to having more. Oh if only people understand and believe what Proverbs 11:24 says:

“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”

Could it be that not tithing and giving offerings is one of the BIGGEST unseen reasons that America is now in rapid financial decline? The whole nation of America is under a curse.

And not just the United States, but the whole world is under a financial curse!

There is a lot to talk about this vital topic. So I HIGHLY recommend you to please read, “Shocking Truths from the Bible: 10 Reasons Why I Tithe”.

A Commandment with a Promise

One study shows that Christians who tithe have healthier finances compared to people who don’t. There is no doubt that the only way to gain is to give something. That’s the natural law that God has set in motion in this universe.

Malachi 3:10-12 states:

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. TEST me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.

A Test Commandment

God wants to see our hearts. He wants to see our priorities in life. He commands us to give 10% of our income to Him and in exchange, He will bless us according to His will.

Among the commandments of God, tithing comes with a DARE. God says, “TEST me in this”. He wants us to test Him through offering and tithing.

Can you believe that? God is saying in effect, “Come on, my child. I want you to test me. I dare you.”

This is one area of God’s character that you can test.

Conclusion

There you have it, my dear readers. This is how you can rob God and robbing God comes with a curse.

To set the record straight, tithing will not make you the richest man on Earth.

It does not support the deceptive “Health and Wealth Gospel”.

What it does is the fact that God will always meet your needs and even the desires of your heart, provided it is according to His will.

Do you want to make God your financial partner? Then begin tithing today and see how He can lead you to better financial stability.

Stop robbing God but rather start giving and you will see how God will open the floodgates of heaven and bless you physically, emotionally, and most importantly, spiritually.

  6. Thank you very much for the writeup.

But I have questions. Kindly answer with relevant Scripture.

    1. Was Malachi written to me? By “me” I mean a Believer in Christ.
    2. Isn’t the Law done away with? The tithing being discussed here in Malachi is indeed the one commanded by the Law of Moses. Are we yet under the Law?
    3. Why didn’t Jesus nor any of the Apostles pay nor receive tithes?
    4. Why didn’t any of the Epistles teach tithing instead of willing givings and contributions for the saints?

    Thank you very much.

    • Hi Adesanmi,

Thank you for getting in touch. 🙂

Let me answer your questions one by one.

      1. Yes, it is written to every believer in Christ and it isn’t limited to the Israelites. Tithing is an act of worship.
I am confident that you will agree with me that a believer in Christ is also a FOLLOWER of Christ.
For this reason, it is important to see what Christ has to say about tithing. We read:

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin [garden herbs], and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone” (Matthew 23:23).

Christ was saying here that we still need to tithe along with upholding the weightier matters of the law. Notice that Christ didn’t say we should stop tithing, but instead, He said, we ought to do it!

      2. May I know what you mean by the “law of Moses”? Tithing has already been a practice of God’s servants even before Moses came to the picture. We read in Genesis 14:18-22 that Abraham gave a tithe of the spoils of war. But we know that Abraham isn’t an Israelite nor a Jew. Yet, he still tithed.

      3. Jesus made mention of tithing and like what I mentioned above, He upheld tithing. Moreover, tithing has been a common practice among the first-century Church and Jews. Thus, it is not necessary for the Bible to reiterate this instruction.

      4. Tithing is a personal choice. Thus, the principle of freely giving also applies to tithing. Moreover, Christians today are also encouraged, depending on their faith, to give offerings aside from tithes.
I hope I answered your question. I wish to give you a more detailed answer but time won’t permit me. However, if you are really interested, I’d like to share this free booklet to you entitled, What Does the Bible Teach About Tithing?
