7 Surprising Things Christians Should Never Say [SHOCKING]

While there are obvious things that Christians should not say, there are those that we unknowingly say without really having given thought to. Even well-meaning and sincere Christians say these words without knowing what they just said is false or not according to God’s words.

In this blog, let me share with you 7 things Christians should stop saying.

1. Good luck!

If you are a believer in God, you should not rely on luck, rather you need to rely on God’s help.

It is true that God can let the natural forces of the universe do their course, but He is always in complete control. Wishing good luck for a person is like attributing the good things in life to mere luck and not God’s blessing.

So instead of saying, “good luck”, better say, “God bless”.

2. Oh my God!

This is one of the most common expressions I hear not only on TV but also in the neighborhood. “Oh, my God” and its other variations (Oh my goodness, Oh my G, OMG, Jeez, Geez) are forms of using God’s name in vain. This is certainly a direct transgression of the 3rd commandment (Exodus 20:7).

Reducing God to a mere expression is an insult to His love and sovereignty over us.

3. He/she is in heaven now.

First, no one really knows whether a person is saved or not (since it is God’s prerogative).  Second, the Bible says that no one has ascended to heaven except Christ (John 3:13). Even David, a man after God’s own heart, NEVER went to heaven (Acts 2:29, 34)!

When you read from Genesis to Revelation, you will NOT find even a single verse that tells us that the reward of the righteous is going to heaven. Instead, every dead in Christ are waiting for His second coming in their graves (John 5:25).

There are many things to discuss regarding this important topic. So please make sure you read “Shocking Truths from the Bible: Heaven is NOT the Reward for the Righteous“.

4. You’re going to hell.

You’re not in the position to determine who’s going to hell or not. It is never our duty to condemn people. More importantly, we don’t have the right to tell God who’s going to be saved or not.

It is crucial that we realize that there is more to hell that we might not understand. There are a lot of misconceptions about hell that you probably aren’t aware of.

For example, most people believe that God will eternally torment wicked people in hell. Another misconception is that unrighteous dead people are immediately thrown into the lake of fire. These are just of those false teaching in the Bible.

5. We are all God’s children.

As wonderful as it may sound, this is not the case in the scripture. The Bible says that there are two categories of people: The children of God and the children of the Devil. So how do we know? Read I John 3:10.

“This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.”

6. Believe in Christ and you’ll be saved.

With belief comes faith. However, there is a dead faith and a living faith (James 2:17).

Dead faith means your belief does not change your behavior while active living faith behooves you to become a better person according to God’s will.

Believing alone in Christ is NEVER enough. Because if it is true then there would be many demons who should have been saved (James 2:19). This is a big topic, but I recommend you to read “Saved by Faith or Works? Did James and Paul Contradict?

7. Don’t judge

It seems that many people are now allergic to the word, “judge.” When you point out something that’s clearly a sinful behavior, Christians are quick to say, “don’t judge.”

I sure can understand that many Christians today are compelled not to judge other people. For them, judging is equivalent to condemning. They believe that we are not to judge since we can’t see people’s hearts.

[Also read: Shocking Truths from the Bible: Is it Really Wrong to Judge?]

The truth of the matter is that there are two types of judging: the wrong one and the right one.

The wrong type of judging is stated by Jesus, Himself. He said in Matthew 7:1-5:

“Judge not, that you be not judged.”

Why?

“For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye?

So what did Jesus say we are supposed to do?  He said:

First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

The main point of Christ here is that we must judge ourselves FIRST. We must identify our sins, correct them, and do what is right in God’s eyes. Only then you can properly follow Christ’s later admonition:

“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with RIGHTEOUS judgment” (John 7:24).

Conclusion

I know there are many things that we should avoid saying as Christians, but more than that, we need to know as well what we should say.

Wisdom and godly knowledge do not come naturally, you need to study God’s word to really determine God’s will for us. So the next time you make a statement, make sure you know God is happy with those words. This way, we can all become better Christians! 🙂

  1. Hello Joshua, May I use some of your posts in part, to send to people on my email list whom I regularly send helpful Christian information to? I’m only referring to parts you have written — not copyrighted UCG material. Sincerely, Bob

  3. I like what I have read. A lot of people being Christians judge wrongly without looking to themselves

  4. Acts 16:31 says “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved, and thy house.”
Philippians 2:8-9 says “for by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.
Believing in Christ is enough to save us. He then gives us grace to overcome the hurdles on our way.

  5. I’m sorry, but you are very mistaken in saying that there is no one in heaven. God’s word says, “Absent from the body, present with the Lord.” For those in Christ. Also as Jesus was dyeing on the cross with the two thieves on either side of Him one thief asked Jesus to remember Him when He came into His kingdom. Jesus replied, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Please do not tell others no one is in heaven and take away their peace and hope.”

    • Hi Terrie,

      Thanks for your comment. 🙂

The statement “Absent from the body, present with the Lord” does not prove that a person who dies will immediately go to heaven. It is an experience of the desire to be with God. Moreover, even when we are still alive, we can already be present with the Lord by having Him in our life.

Regarding the thief on the cross, it is actually a matter of the comma placement. It should be rendered, “I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise.” Instead of, “I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Remember, Christ didn’t go to heaven when He died. He actually went to the grave.

      I hope this helps, Terrie.

God’s plan of salvation is way better than what we think. So, I don’t believe that stating the truth about heaven takes away the peace of hope of people. After all, Jesus, Himself, said, “No one has ascended into heaven” (John 3:13).

      • Joshua
I agree with you. I learned Greek have no comma. Like today I say to you,….more clear than I say to you, today….because Jesus did told woman who went to see tomb , says I didn’t went to my Father…..

  6. I was not speaking of every human being. For those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. The Bible is very clear on that. If you believe different then we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

    • Hi Terrie,

No worries. We can really simply agree to disagree. I’m not here to convince anyone, but I simply want to share God’s word of truth.

May God guides us to all truths.

      Regards,
      Joshua

      • The bible actually shows that Enoch, Moses and Elijah have ascended to heaven. As for others once you die, you go into grave and wait until Christ returns, it’s simple as that. People will be resurrected for Christ’s promise and some for eternal damnation (Eternal means to cause the soul to cease to exist for God is not a God of eternal torment, this is proven by the concept that Jesus died for our sins because the wages of sin is literally death, the only way to truly get rid of sin is to die, which Christ did for us so the ones who still have sin will be consumed with it so that it exist not)

Hope that helps, if anything isn’t clear send me an email at ajstoby@gmail.com

      • HI Meshach,

Are you saying that Christ lied in John 3:13? That’s a dangerous teaching.

Enoch, Moses, and Elijah didn’t go to heaven. I’ll write articles about this in the future, but I can tell you right now that a deeper reading and understanding of the Scripture will show you that they didn’t go to heaven.

        Regards,
        Joshua

  7. What about Luke 23 43
43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
