The Question the Pope did not Answer: Why does God allow Suffering?

During Pope Francis’ visit here in the Philippines last January 2015, a little girl threw a question the Pope, I think, was not ready for. It was Glyzelle Iris Palomar, 12, who spoke to the Pope. She asked, “Why does God allow Children to suffer?” Click here to read the whole news item.

The 78-year-old pontiff hugged the child for a few seconds. However, he had this answer for her question.

“She is the only one who has put a question for which there is NO answer and she wasn’t even able to express it in words but in tears,” The heart of your (Chura) question has no reply. Only when we too can cry about the things you said can we come close to answering that question. Why do children suffer so much? Why do children suffer? When the heart is able to ask itself and weep, then we can understand something. I invite each one here to ask yourself: have I learned how to weep? Have I learned how to weep for the emarginated or for a street child who has a drug problem or for an abused child?”

Basically, the pope just said, “I don’t know”. His answer is VAGUE.

Instead of answering the question of the little girl, the pope spoke about tears and how to weep about suffering.

Methinks, the question of the girl deserved an explanation. The question of the girl was valid and it really begged for answers. One of the saddest things that could happen to a person is for him or her to question the love or even the very existence of God.

There is no doubt: people have become atheists because they simply can’t explain why a loving God allow suffering in this world.

Therefore, it is very IMPORTANT to answer the question, “Why does God allow suffering?” When we realize and understand the answer, we will have a better grasp of God’s plan for humanity.

I have written a blog about this question. Please read my blog entry, Top Three Reasons Why God Allow Suffering. After reading this blog, you will have a better grasp and understanding about the answer to this question.
