The Oscar’s Red Carpet and the Bible

As the Oscar’s night draws near, I can’t help but notice the obsession of many people on what the celebrities will be wearing. I am astonished about how many reviews, TV shows, blogs, magazines, and others that have to do with the Oscar’s fashion show. I even believe that what the celebrities wear is as important as the Oscar’s itself.

Celebrity worship

There is no doubt that people have become obsessed with celebrities. This is very evident when we take a look at the success of showbiz TV shows, magazines, and related businesses. With the availability of technological advancement, it is very easy for us to gossip about other people and learn about how they live their personal life.

It is only natural for us to be interested on other people. After all, we are social beings that are constantly on the look for people on the higher strata of our society. But this tendency can easily lead to various problems.

Idolizing other people is tantamount to breaking the commandment of God, “Thou shalt not have other gods beside me” (Exodus 20:3). Even one of the most famous talent show today is named as “American IDOL”. While people will surely dismiss this as merely entertainment, our society is slowly but surely being intoxicated and brain washed about true morality. We are now too numbed to see what really matters in this life.

Instead of worshiping the True God of this vast universe, we begin to create our own gods.

The power of image

Image is powerful.

Every year, the Oscars will not be enough without the red carpet where celebrities will pose and showcase their dresses.

But is outward appearance that important?

In this world being shaped by the popular media, the definition of beauty is too shallow. Sex is being glorified and women are seen as mere sex object. Women try to compensate to live up to the perverted view of beauty leading to decreased self-esteem and confidence. The tragedy of this modern world will lead to more sadness, frustration, and anguish.

Therefore, let us remember what the Bible say about beauty.

“Do not let your adornment be merely outward – arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel – rather let it be the HIDDEN PERSON OF THE HEART, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God” (I Peter 3:3-4).

Beauty can be deceitful. Celebrities might be some of the most beautiful people in the world, but that is not what God is looking for. As time passes by, beauty will fade away, but only the character we developed remains. I am not saying that it is wrong to dress up to the occasion or to groom yourself. In fact, that is being encouraged.

What we need to consider is our MOTIVE. Our dress and clothing should glorify God rather than being a stumbling block to other people and cause them to sin. We need to choose what is right in the sight of God.

Final words

In the time of this writing, Ukraine is in dire situation with political unrest. While people are too busy preparing for the Oscars, I hope we won’t forget that people are dying and suffering at the other side of the world. Let us not be too obsessed with what we see, because what we see is only temporary. Let us start focusing on God and His way of life, because time will come that what we thought is important will eventually come to nothing.
