Is Mary, Mother of Jesus, a Perpetual Virgin?

Discover the truth hidden to many people today. Let us take a look at what the Bible really says about the perpetual virginity of Mary, the mother of Christ.

According to traditional Christianity, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a perpetual virgin. But does the Bible support this popular belief?

In this blog, I will share to you biblical proofs that Mary has other children aside from Jesus Christ.

First, the truth

The Bible reveals that Mary is a virgin when she conceived Jesus Christ.

This is proven by the Gospels’ account of her pregnancy along with Isaiah’s prophecy. Here are the proofs.

Many centuries ago, the appearing of the Messiah has been prophesied to happen through a virgin conception as what Isaiah 7:14 mentioned:

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Is Mary perpetually virgin?
Is Mary perpetually virgin?

This was fulfilled through a virgin woman named Mary who is betrothed to Joseph. This can be read in Matthew 1:18:

“Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah happened in this way. When his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they lived together she was discovered to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit.”

But before they are able to be married and have marital relationship, the angel of the Lord appeared to Mary that she will have a Son and Mary immediately answered, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (Luke 1:34).

The expression I know not a man is a soft way to say that she never had sexual encounter with any man especially to Joseph.

With this, we can be certain that the birth of Jesus Christ is unique miracle. His divine birth is made with the power of God.

Now, the SHOCKING truth

Though we can see that Mary was a virgin when she conceived Jesus Christ, WE DO NOT SEE ANY PROOF THAT SHE REMAINED TO BE SO AFTERWARDS.

This might shock you but after Jesus’ birth, Mary again conceived not once, but at least six times! Joseph fathered more than five children to Mary.

What’s the proof?

Please read Matthew 13:55-56:

“Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?”

In this passage, we can be certain that Jesus has at least SIX siblings! We can perceive that Jesus had at least two sisters (“sisters” as being plural) and four brothers. The same can be read in Mark 6:3.

“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.”

People knew each other well in the small town of where Jesus lived and grew up. When Jesus was preaching in His own country, people were amazed that a person whom they are familiar with, whom they have seen growing up, whom they knew His family background well, can perform such miracles and teachings.

Another scripture telling us that James and Jude are the half brothers of Jesus Christ can be found in Galatians and Jude.

“But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother(Galatians 1:19).

“Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ” (Jude 1).

Rejecting false teaching

Now that you have seen the proofs, it is time for you to reject satanic deception and learn the truth.

Mary was a virgin when she conceived Christ.

She had children after she gave birth to Jesus.

We can therefore conclude that the doctrine of perpetual virginity of Mary is gravely MISTAKEN, false, hoax, and wrong.

Sadly, people are led to pray to Mary instead of praying directly to God the Father and in the name of Jesus Christ.

Mary is not in heaven as many suppose to be since we can read in the scripture that no one ascended to heaven (John 3:13).

Worshiping other human beings is deeply rooted in paganism and should NEVER BE PRACTICED BY TRUE CHRISTIANS. We are only to worship God the Father and Jesus Christ and no one else.

So the next time someone tells you that Mary is perpetually virgin, you can confidently say that the Bible teaches otherwise.

  3. This is interesting, but in those days weren’t ‘brothers’ also a term for cousins/extended family and people who lived closely in a group as friends?

    • Yes, that’s right. But you can read the context of the verses to get an idea. The facts are obvious and you don’t need to think hard or twist things just to get the fact. 🙂

  4. Oh my goodness! Incredible article dude! Thank you, However I am encountering troubles with your RSS.
I don’t know why I can’t join it. Is there anybody having the same RSS
problems? Anyone who knows the answer will you kindly respond?
    Thanks!!

    • Hi Ocean,

I am not sure what the problem is, but I know the the RSS is working perfectly. Maybe you just give it a try after a few minutes or so.

By the way, thanks for the comment. 🙂

  5. obviously you don’t understand the culture at that time well.
if Jesus had brothers, why would he appoint John to take care of His Mother? it is against the culture and practice.
English translation does not give the full picture.
The word “brothers” that was used in Greek was “adelphos” which means brother/cousin/near relative/kinsman.This does not necessary mean blood relation.
    Thus,
Jesus does not have any blood brothers.

    • Hi Shirley,

      Thanks for your comment.

      Let’s examine the scripture:

      John 19:26-27 (NIV)
26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

Remember that all of the disciples of Christ forsaken Him. And it was only John who was present. In addition to this, John is a very close friend of Jesus. Thus, this shows how much Jesus trusted John. Moreover, Jesus is the eldest brother and it is probable that Joseph was already dead. It is His responsibility to look for a person who will take care of His mother, a widow.

Assuming that the mentioned name in the verse are just cousins or kinsman is farfetch. Notice that the statement started with His Father and Mother. It is not logically to then mention His relatives other than His blood brother and sister.

If it is true that they are referring to his cousins or kinsman, then it is most certain that the word “brothers” and “sisters” should have not been used.

Also, there is no doubt that Galatians 1:9 described James as His half-brother.

It is quite clear that Mary had other children. 🙂

    • Hi Ginika,

Thanks for dropping a comment. 🙂

However, may I know how you can say that I’m lying? I just used the scripture to prove my point. If you have read this blog in its entirety, you would know that I have a point. Instead of refuting my points, you simply call me a liar.

I’m keen to hear your points though. 🙂

      Regards,

  9. In this blog I see that there is a reference to John 3:13. To show that no possible way Mary or any one could go to Heaven. ( No one has ascended into Heaven except he who descended from Heaven, the Son of Man). That is most certainly true, but the word used here is “ascended”. There is a distinct difference between an ASCENSION and an ASSUMPTION. Jesus ascended by his own devine power. Elijah and Enoch (and Mary if you are of that faith) were assumed into Heaven by the power of God.

      • Hello Joshua!
By the word “assumed” I was trying to make the distinction between asension and assumption. For example in Genesis 5:24 KJV it states that Enoch was taken by God. I used the word “assumed” meaning “taken up” by the power of God, as was Elijah in second Kings 2:11. John 3:13 denies the ability of someone (other than The Lord) to ascend to Heaven. Ascend implies using one’s own power to go to Heaven.John 3:13 does not deny the ability of God to take up someone to Heaven. This is not, as you imply, my “making a doctrine out of my own interpretation”. This is an already established doctrine of Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians.
In the case of Mary, I put a disclaimer in my comment “if you are of that faith” because no where in the New Testament will you find any direct reference to Mary’s assumption. I know the Catholics and Eastern Orthadox christians are of this faith. They base this faith on theological inferences from 1 corinthians 15:54 and chapter 12 of the book of revelations and that for Mary, death in consequence of her freedom from original sin and personal sin was not a consequence of punishment of sin so was eligible for assumption. Incidentally, there is an apocryphal work which some Gnostic Christians use, Transitus Mariae (‘Passing of Mary:) which tells the story of the Apostles being transported by white clouds to the death-bed of Mary, each from the town where he was preaching at that hour except Thomas. When Thomas arrived after Mary’s entombment he asked to see the body of Mary. When the Apostles opened the tomb they found it empty and concluded that Her body was taken to Heaven.

      • Hi Mark,

Elijah didn’t ascend to heaven. A careful analysis will tell you the truth. I would like to quote a passage from this UCG post (https://www.ucg.org/bible-study-tools/booklets/heaven-and-hell-what-does-the-bible-really-teach/did-elijah-go-to-heaven)

Many readers assume that Elijah at that point was made immortal and taken to the heaven where God resides. This was not the case. The sons of the prophets knew otherwise. They knew the whirlwind had simply removed Elijah to another location on earth. They exclaimed to Elisha: “Look now, there are fifty strong men with your servants. Please let them go and search for your master, lest perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley” (2 Kings 2:16).

The disciples were concerned for Elijah’s safety, so they sent out a party of 50 men to search for him. The 50 searched for three days but did not find him (2 Kings 2:17).

Another passage proves conclusively that Elijah was not taken up to live in heaven. The Bible records that Elijah wrote a letter to Jehoram, the king of Judah, several years after he was removed in the whirlwind.

Notice the sequence of events recorded for us in the Bible. Elijah’s last recorded and dated act occurred during the reign of the Israelite king Ahaziah when Elijah told the king he would die for his sins (2 Kings 1:3-17). Ahaziah’s reign lasted only about a year, ca. 850 B.C.

Elijah’s removal and replacement by Elisha is then recorded in the next chapter, 2 Kings 2. The story continues with incidents from Elisha’s life, including an encounter with Jehoshaphat, king of Judah (2 Kings 3:11-14). Several years later Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, succeeded his father as king of Judah, ca. 845 B.C. (2 Kings 8:16).

Jehoram proved to be a wicked king, leading the nation of Judah in rebellion against God’s commandments. A few years into Jehoram’s reign, and several years after Elijah’s removal, Jehoram received a letter from Elijah warning the king of dire consequences because of his sins. This letter is recorded in 2 Chronicles 21:12-15.

This letter proves that the prophet was still alive and on earth some years after he was removed by the whirlwind and replaced by Elisha. God had chosen Elisha to succeed Elijah as His prophet, so He bodily removed Elijah to another place, where he continued to live for at least several more years—as his letter to Jehoram demonstrates.

The Bible tells us nothing more about Elijah’s life following his writing of the letter. But he eventually died, just like the other prophets and righteous men of the Old Testament, who all died in faith, not yet receiving the eternal life God had promised (Hebrews 11:39).
        ——
Regarding your comment to Mary, I’m not of the faith. The Catholics are free to believe what they want to believe, but if it is not in the Bible and they are just making their own conclusion, then I won’t believe it.

        Cheers,
        Joshua
